muscadine, al.
I have dial up now and I'm in a rural area, plus being in Alabama we are years behind in the times. The Governor announced that there is a plan so that all of Alabama could get high speed internet. How long that will take, who knows.

Centurytel has teamed up with Dish Network and now Hughs net. With Hughs net I can get high speed for $60.00 a month and I'm sure there is at least a year commitment. Haven't called to inquire yet on the details. I wanted to know what other folks were paying for there high speed internet.

I live right close to the stateline and to call three miles down the road, still in Alabama the call is long distance. I can call way south of where I live but hay I don't know anyone that lives there to call. lol I know Hughs net is a satelite service.

What I'm trying to decide is if I want to go ahead and go with Centurytel/Dish network/Hughs net or wait until Alabama catches up with the times {whenever that might be} or wait until I have other options for high speed to get a competive price. Living close to the stateline and the way the phone lines are set up I could just get cut out of the Gov.s plan. because where my house is located.

Does $60.00 a month sound high? I don't know yet what it will cost me to have Hughs Net instalation. Does anyone have Hughs Net? Are you satisfied with your service? Your input would be appericiated.

I pay for a bundle that includes basic cable, home phone and high-speed internet- the cost is $128.00 a month. edit to add- I just checked the bill, and I was originally off a few dollars. Included in my basic is the Verses (sp) channel- without it, my husband is very grumpy.
If I wanted just the internet from them, it would be $100.00, so it only made sense for me to get the bundle.

When i had satellite, they wanted $100.00 for internet.

I pay around $75 a month for cable internet on 2 computers and cable tv w/ extra sports channels from Comcast. Its supposed to be their double play deal (triple play includes phone) for $60 or 66, but after taxes and whatever extras, its between $75 and 80.

I pay for a bundle highspeed internet 1 MEG (I have the hights speed possible),phone and TV is about $125.00 a month.
We are very rual and am suprised that people who are closer to big citys still have dial up.

we live in such a rural area that the ONLY thing we have out here is satelite (Tv service and internet).

We have Hughesnet and let me tell you - I HATE IT with a passion! Oh dont believe that your bill is "only" $60.00 a month - thats a load of malarky

. You have to pay a $400.00 installation fee and if you dont pay it upfront, you roll it into your bill - resulting in a bill of $87.00 a month for 2 years - THEN it drops down to $67.00 a month after that. Service is shoddy at best - goes down constantly - Tech Support is a joke (and overseas) and its so bad that in the 17 months I've had Hughesnet - I've had to pay the bill only 8 months so far - they've credited my account nearly $1,000.00 due to their negligence and downtime.

I've had to call the President of Hughesnet in Hedgesville Maryland at least 6 times (good luck finding that number - took me a while as they refuse to give it to you) and after a week of complaining - I finally got my bill adjusted. When they were supposed to drop off the extra $20.00 a month after the 10th month (I got a deal when I signed up and got $200 waived from installation) - they didnt - and told me it was contracted for 24 months at $20.00 extra per month (thats $480.00 - not $400.00 and certainly not the $200.00 I was promised!

).

So.. they again credited my account - and I just now paid my bill for the first time in 3 months.

You need to watch them like hawks with your billing as well - they also charge you $6.00 a month for a paper billing statement because the only way they bill is through automatic payments (tried that and they took 3 times the amount out of my account!!!

and refused to put it BACK until I called the bank and the President again and told them they STOLE my money without authorization - I authorized 87.00 - not $261.00) they had 24 hours to put it back....or they'd be facing criminal charges..... they put it back within 15 minutes! Amazing...they told me for hours they couldnt do anything about it and would have to "leave the credit on my bill" - but have your bank call and threaten them...amazing what gets immediately put BACK and how fast!

So now I pay an extra $6.00 a month for paper statements (which is total bull) because I refuse to let them do ANY type of electronic transaction at all....

Ugh.

I have naked DSL with bellsouth....no phone just internet....I pay 27.45 my cable is with direct tv for 55.00....I did use comcast cable and with internet cable and phone it was never under 130.00....I save alot of money this way

I do have HughesNet. I pay 69.95 a month, just for the satellite internet. But I need it for school (online college courses) so it is justified.
I would go with the HughesNet, it's hard to say how long they will get around to having DSL in your area. There are some neighbors that have DSL that are just about 4 miles away, but it is not available where I'm at. Plus the company doesn't know when they will have it available. If and when they ever get it here, I'll switch to them, since it is the same company that has our phone service. It would be cheaper to bundle them, since the TV dish is already bundled.

I didn't have to pay for the installation of the satellite dish, but I got mine through earthlink. I don't know if going directly through HughesNet would be the same. I also have a 18 month contract, and again, I'm not sure if going directly through HughesNet would be the same.
