what do you put under your roost to catch the droppings

I read somewhere on here that you can hang dark light weight fabric over the boxes at night to discourage them from roosting in the nesting boxes and then in the morning just roll it up and tie it up. Once they learn they shouldnt sleep in there then you can take the fabric down. I've not tried it but it may be helpful for you.

They hang about 4" below the roost. They overhang about 4" on each side.
How you mount them is up to you. I hang mine on wire hooks.

We just finished our coop so this has not been tested...

but we got a landscapers tarp that we are going to put down and then hay on top. When it gets nasty we will dump it in our composter and rinse it off. Of course we do not live in an area where we have snow or ice. Especially since we are having such a mild winter.
Has anyone else tried this?

It is interesting what everyone uses. I like the bowls, myself, and may give it a try! LOL
We use shavings on our floors, then top with a sprinkle of hay. I come around every once in a while and scoop the whole kit'nkaboodle up and put it on the manure compost heap. Then start over.

I use wood shavings over the entire foor of the coop and clean it out about every other week. I all goes in the compost pile.
