Pets all the way. Of course we enjoy the eggs, too, but give away more than we eat. I keep hardboiled eggs in the fridge at work to keep me from getting hangry.
Two and a half years ago, my husband came home with four chicks of different breeds for my daughter’s birthday and a tiny prefab coop from the hardware store. Little did he know that a few months later I’d make him build a bigger coop and that our little flock would totally consume me. I’ve never looked back and chickens will probably always be a part of my life. I got six chicks the following year, but held off this year, as I want to make sure I can manage them well and tend to their needs. They have changed me forever, and have made me eat almost vegan. Someday I might like to rescue battery hens. I am utterly amazed at their complex social structure and am absolutely convinced they are capable of emotions like jealousy and empathy.
