What do your neighbors think about your chickens?

We had a wonderful roo that we sold. I rather regret that we sold him.HOwever, it was a bit of a surprise when we found out that our neighbor misses him too. He told
us that he loved watching him herd the hens around our place. It amused him how the roo seemed to know if one was missing. Our neighbor has actually asked if we could get another rooster.

Both neighbors have chicken (not as many as me) so life is good. I would encourage the other neighbors around you to get them also.

People think I'm weird for calling my dog by jumping, flailing my arms and making weird noises! Problem is he won't take notice or come otherwise! I have to be more exciting that the dog across the street!

People also think it's weird that I shower with my cockatiel. He loves rolling aournd on the (empty) soap tray and we sing in there together, it's FUN!

My neighbors love my chickens and roosters. My next door neighbor has chickens too. I have lived in my neighborhood 25 years and really didnt get to know anyone til we got the chickens. Most fo our neighbors have lived her generations and remember having chickens as kids. I asked the lady down the street one day if my roosters bothered her,she said she doesnt even hear them then a few days ago she told me I heard your rooster for the first time the other morning. She was sitting on her porch early and she said it was the most beautiful sound she had heard in a long time. My neighbors know I am crazy so they dont think anything of me out with my flock talking to them thanking them for the eggs. I say dont feel weird you are not you are just in good company. As for the lady that threatened you feel sorry for her that she has no life that she has to worry about what everyone else is doing. If her dog came in my yard guess I would have to let my mean dog in hers.

Surprisingly, its the roosters people say they like. Our alderman came by to visit just before election day, and he said he always kept a rooster, and anybody who keeps chickens ought to be able to keep a rooster, too. In many of these older homes, there are still little coops in the backyards from the Victory Gardens era.

Our town is old fashioned suburban, with sidewalks and lots about 50X100ft, most of the houses are around a hundred years old in varying stages of rehab, some teardowns and fancy schmancy rebuilds. But the housing market bubble burst in 2009 just after we got our chickens, and now I am surrounded by foreclosures filled with transient renters. Most neighbors stay for around 6-8 months, and they have been very nice and happy to visit the chickens. 2 homeowners just behind my lot have never been nice anyways, and the only thing they've ever said about the chickens was when their poorly mannered teenboy said, "I have a clear shot from my back porch, I'll shoot Chloe first". DH made a police report about that.

On the bright side, four neighbors reported getting chickens after visiting mine.

Another neighbor gave me a gift of rooster mugs, telling me to "stop worrying, its fine" when I worried the rooster made too much noise. The LAST thing I want is to wake anybody up at 00:GOD:00 hours. So, we insulated their coop, even the ceiling, for muffling. Still, a man who's lived on my block for 20 years longer than I have, told the mailman, "Noise? It's me who starts the rooster crowing! I get up at 3am to pee and can't get back to sleep, so I open the back door and crow, sometimes he crows back".

Poor hens get almost no attention at all.

But I think, when it comes to neighbors, probably a lot of people have trouble with neighbors anyways. Chickens just give them more to bawk about. If you didn't have chickens, they'd pick on anything else.

The majority of my neighbors also have chickens, who crow to each other. I doubt any of them hear crowing while they're asleep; I certainly don't. Wouldn't matter; I love to hear crowing. Now the new puppies who whine all night....

same here all of my neighbors have poultry of some sort, and they love to "talk" to each other.

I have a dog that when he is outback at night he sits by the fence and "monologues" as I call it. He will stop when we stick our heads out and fuss though

Forgot to add, when I bought this old house 10 years ago, it was slated for tear-down, and pretty much looked (and was) trashed. It had been my intention to move on once I could return to work full time and put my family in a more decent house, but with our medical bills and need for handicap access at that time, this house really worked, in fact it was a GodSend.

But people who are nosey, bickering, know-it-all, soapbox heroes will look at an old house like this and make snap judgements when the chickens are sighted. People with small minds who believe strongly that their life is the way all lives should be lived, and their ease is as easy for everybody. They point at poverty and say nasty things, instead of wondering "are they alright?" , or "could they use a hand?". One guy consistently made digs at our lack of new paint, despite my obvious exhaustion from working long nights and trying to care for my special kids, alone.

Since the chickens moved in, a relative died and left us some money to fix up the old house a bit, so now it is actually a pretty old house. With pretty little chickens.

But, for Pete's Sake, some people just want to point their bony crooked fingers and judge.
