I would have never thought I'd be looking at pictures of chicken poop. I've been worried about my girls being sick. I'm seeing more and more of the watery and runny droppings. As hot as it is here in Louisiana I feel it's just they are drinking a lot more then they have been.

Well, I looked at all the pics of the lovely poo & it helped me somewhat, however, I didn't see any like I'm seeing from one of my Buff Orpingtons the past 2 days. It is thin & ribbon like. Normal in color though. I only have 2 chickens & so far I haven't been able to determine which one it is. Both are very healthy looking & seem to be happy, eating & drinking normally. Should I be concerned? Thanks, I've been pretty worried since I don't know much about chickens yet as I have only had them 1 month today.

Probably a dumb question but how do I figure out if her vent is blocked & how to I fix it if it is? Neither chickens have started laying eggs yet (anxiously awaiting that happy day) Thanks SO much for your response.

There's only one exit out the back of the chicken. If you start looking around under their tail you should find it. You can search the forums for "Pasty butt" for more information on hardening of poop on the vent and how to remove.

OK, the saga continues...we leave the girls out of the pen every night to roam around in our yard for about an hour or so a little before bedtime & I always watch where they poop so I can clean it up before I left my dog back out. Both of them had loose poop, at least 1 was real watery. They had been eating tomatoes and watermelon but it wouldn't go through them that quickly would it? There are normal formed poop in their run area & some on their poop board but there is also some ribbon like in the coop. I tried to look at both their butts but it was hard to do. That area looks real clean & neat but I guess it could be under their feathers? The first poop that each did right after they were out of the pen was normal in color & size but a little loose but then after that both were runny. We had awful storms here today & I wondered if that could have made them nervous & could it affect their pooping. I know when my dog gets nervous or upset she gets loose bowels. Just as a by the way...my hubby & I were sitting on chairs talking & the next thing I knew Gertie was up in my lap, seemed like she was settling in for the night...lol It was so neat. Gracie wanted to come up too but I didn't let her. I never realized their feathers were so downy soft & smooth.

When my husband comes home from work today we'll try to see if we can look at their vents. We cleaned out the coop & poop board last night before we tucked them in & this morning when I left them out of the coop, there were both types of poop again.

Do you give your chickens a lot of fruit as treats? I've seen posters mention that too much melon results in watery poops from their birds. You mentioned the watermelon and tomatoes in your post but I wonder if you give other treats throughout the day?
