I know it has not been that long since my first post. I could probably adjust my "tone" as well. I am usually a mellow/rational person but right now I am actually shaking. I want to treat my roo and then I will be dealing with the bird that attacked him. The neighbors and I have been very forgiving of each other's animals but allowing aggressive roosters to roam is not acceptable. If they won't cull it, I will.

My local feed store is closed so I will be going to the pharmacy to see what I can find. Thanks for the help.

Ok....I'm back and a bit calmer.

This is what I have done so far:

I went to the pharmacy and spoke to the pharmacist. We got a tube of Polysporin and looked up all of the ingredients. It turns out the both of the active ingredients are used in human eye creams. The only inactive indredient is petroleum jelly. So we concluded that Polysporin would not cause harm to an eye. (eternal thanks to the pharmacist...she was determined to help my bird)

Nugget has been laying around most of the day. He decided to nap under the brooder after his first eye flush and scrambled egg meal. He was not showing interest in water at all. Seemed uncomfortable and a little unbalanced.

When I got home from the pharmacy, I had my daughter offer him red gatoraid in a spoon. He apparently LOVES red gatoraid. He also ate almost a whole scrambled egg. Within minutes he was running around and even attacked my shoestring (a daily ritual).

He flew up onto my arm and opened his eye for a second. The eye IS intact.

I can tell there is pus inside the lid under his eye. I rinsed again with sterile water and applied the Polysporin in hope enough will get to the area inside. I didn't want to force the eye open.
New Question: Should I put him on oral antibiotic also? Do I somehow need to remove the pus? Am I missing anything?

I have not had a chance to get pics. It is definately an injury, not disease. He was attacked by the neighbor's rooster. I had noticed a small cut on his eyelid which I stupidly believed was superficial. Yesterday I noticed the swelling an thought he had been attacked again...I was wrong. After I managed to wash away the crust, I could see the infection is inside the lid, under the eye.

You can use an old wash rag and soak in warm water, squeeze it out, put it on his eye and use it as a warm compress to help draw the pus out. You can hopefully lay him down on one side and cover him with a towel to help calm him while you do this. Continue his eye treatment as before. Repeat warm compress as necessary.

Thanks, I will try that. I guess I can't make him dislike me anymore than he does right now.

He is on mandatory R&R today. He hates the cage!

I worked in the ER and saw all types of grotesque injuries but I have never been able to deal with eyeballs.

It would also be easier if I did not know the patient.
