What food treats do you use for chickens?

I consider it their *job* to eat anything that I can't put directly in the compost bin. That means leftover meat that's a little older than I'm comfortable eating, cheese that's gotten moldy, etc.

(Then, they jump into the compost bin and scratch around in there for whatever I didn't give directly to them!)

They get Layena pellets daily and scratch grains or black oil sunflower seeds sometimes (I save those for getting them back into the pen when I want them in.)

They are all still alive. I wouldn't worry too much.

I've found their tastes have changed as they get older. At 16 weeks, tomatoes are their favorite. Two months ago they would not go near them. Keep trying new things to see what they will like. Mine won't eat carrots for anything but I know others have written carrots are a favorite. So I'll keep trying...

I read on here that they like yogurt and I also had a bunch of instant grits packets, so we created yogrit. I cooked the grits, let cool, and mixed with a cup or two of plain yogurt. All nine hens ate out of the same bowl, at the same time, until they had licked the bowl clean! We have done this twice and gotten the same reaction.
