what gender does this 5 month old barred rock mix look

I’m going to say cockerel. I may have missed it but how old is it? And can you get a pic of it in natural light? I think I see some male feathers coming in on the back.

I dont understand the first thing about chicken genetics, so I'll ignore that,Haha. However, looks like a pullet to me. At five months old I would imagine it would have crowed already if Male, and definitely would have saddle feathers. If we could get a clearer picture of the back area where saddle feathers would develop, it might be easier. Otherwise, I agree with a lot of others. Pullet.

So the cross was Bantam Brahama rooster x Barred Rock hen? If so it would have to be a cockerel. Right?
i agree. has to be a boy if the father was non barred and the mother is barred.

my reasoning: The male carries 2 barring genes the female carries 1. unlike humans the chicken female has the equivalent of the xy the barring gene is on the "x" which goes to the male offspring. (they actually have different letters ZW but this is the simplest explanation) a barred female CAN'T pass barring to a female offspring.

that being said...... the bird looks like a girl. 0.o

Here is the father to it..a very leggy bantam dark brahma and a standard size barred rock mom. Only 50% BR, but it looks more like the mom. The dad to this mix was not fully matured, in this photo and i got rid of him. Was quite a bully!LOL

Its a black sex link.

A non white rooster (because dominant white covers barring) crossed over a barred rock hen is a black sex link.

Males will be black and white barred.

Females will be a mix of the fathers colors and black.

Look up black stars.

Your chicken is a cockerel.
