What happened in the olden days when someone got caught stealing hens?

I heard it directly from an old timer 20 years ago....

farmer with their alarm call. The would be thief got exactly what the guineas predicted he would: 6 months in jail.

My pop used to tell me that my grandma keped a shotgun near her bedroom door, It had 4 rounds in a holder thing on the stock and one in the chamber.

1st shot-rocksalt
2nd shot- bird shot
3rd shot- 00 buckshot
4th shot- punkinball (slug)
5th shot- 00buckshot (just incase you had really stupid buddy with you)

If the poor thief actually survived the homeowner's shotgun.... they'd usually get 3 - 6 months on a chain-gang or work crew. No laying around all day in jail. If it happened to be a kid or teenager, and was actually stealing it to feed the family, the judge would sometimes sentence them to that same 3 - 6 months, but working at the farm where he stole the chicken. The farmer had to provide one meal a day to the kid as wages, the kid found out just how much work went into raising and keeping that chicken, and a potential crimminal offender was usually stopped before they got started.

Common sense justice, if you ask me.
