I found 4 perfectly good metal shelves setting in a parking lot next to the garbage can. What person in their right mind would throw such an item away? It’s now my brooder in the shop. After spending way more money than I wanted to spend to buy a 6'L x 20" W piece of closet maid shelving to complete a broody pen, I had an "A-Ha!" moment. Refrigerator shelving. Sure enough, the next time we went to the dump, we found a freezer that was being discarded. It had nice white, rubber coated shelves. I brought those home and they will be a perfect start to the next broody pen I want to build. They have extensions on each end which would also work nicely (as hinges) to turn each shelf into a "door" for a chick brooder, or other similar enclosure. An added bonus was 2 freezer baskets that were in "like new" condition. After sterilizing them, I'll find a good use for them.
