Alrighty- after reading and thinking and plotting, I shared the chronology of this thread with my husband. He had a really good idea that I would like to throw out there. It may come off creepy but please hear me out as I come in peace.

Would anyone experienced with similar processes, and are somewhat near to Indiana, be willing to help me with this? I have a hybrid car so I get great gas mileage. I am a mom-in-the-home so work wouldn’t be a factor. Husband can stay behind for kiddo/pets. I could reasonably drive to Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio and maybe even Tennessee and Missouri.

I know this sounds ridiculous because the argument could be “why don’t you just take her to the vet?” Fair enough question! There’s only one bird vet in the state, an hour and a half away, and they specialize in exotic birds. I’d inquired into their ability to treat ducks (back when the other Pekin’s apparent illnesses took hold) and they said they did but it was their non-chalant attitude (“all birds are basically the same it’s just that their needs are what separates them”) and their high costs that I was a little put-off by. But if need be, due to stranger danger (reasonable) or others’ availability (also reasonable) I’ll try and see if I can visit them.

Truthfully, and this sounds odd I’m sure, but I trust this boards’ members better than I would a vet. The motivation for success is completely different. Money is somewhat of an issue as I can’t (as a parent) justify spending thousand(s) of dollars but I also can’t (as an animal caregiver/lover) not give it my all and reasonable sacrifice to try. I just don’t want some half-hearted/jut wingin’ it to see what sticks sort of treatment.

My hisband’s justification is that I lack another set of reliable hands needed for such a detailed endeavor. My 9 year old, who freaks when they think that the duck is going to nibble them and that it’ll hurt (side note, I think it tickles when they do that LOL) as well as my total inexperience and concern that I’d be hurting her = not getting it done right or actually inadvertently hurting her from less than ideal situation.

It sounds like a creepy How to Catch a Predator but I promise you it isn’t that. We’ve all grown accustomed to a ‘don’t meet strangers off the internet’ type living.

I could be at hotel and we could meet at an approved location if kidnapping/home info is a concern (though I assure you I won’t kidnap you LOL)

He just figured, and after consideration, I agree, that I would benefit from a supportive and knowledgeable hand being present. It would give me reassurance as it relates to the depth/dangers of the wound as well as a second set of helping hands for the work itself.

I could compensate for the assist, or buy supper or any other such recompense the helper would seek.

I know with our disastrous world this could sound super weird. Just thought I might swing the idea out there. Like it could just be labeled a small version of a duck convention

I could bring me, my duck and the supplies and I could do all the work myself. Would just like a supervisor or experienced duck friend nearby. Especially one who could tangibly assess the hole in person instead of just via photo.

I may freak out when something happens to mine, but I don't have any issues taking care of it, once I know how too.
I was serious about the going back to school for vet. I took all the biology and chemistry in high school to prepare for it and got derailed by the opinions of others.

I could, it would only add an hour or two. I wouldn't be able to leave til Thursday or Friday morning, though. I'd need to make arrangements for the lady I drive to and from work, and drive for uber/lyft for the extra gas money to go. Since I don't eat a lot, that's really all I would need any money for, and i get my next check on Tuesday, so I would be able to make it back, too. I can pack cooler with drinks, and food stuffs.

Only if it's feasible, and I will need to talk to my other half, lol... I'm right between I-40 and I-65, about an hour south of Nashville.. he works away during the week, but gets home *usually* late on Fri or Sat afternoon, so weekendish timing could work... just a thought...

It should be, I have a corolla. I have a cage for fancy and speedy, but they are spoiled and will sit, one on my shoulder and the other on my lap. Then fall asleep that way. Smh
