*** OG UPDATE ( ** I exercised poor judgment in letting the girls go outside again yesterday.

Day one, which I had recorded for you guys, was fine and she preened herself up well and there wasn’t a problem on the wipe and swipe.

Day 2, yesterday, let them out again. I didn’t bother posting pics or vids because it was just the same ol’ muddy ducky story.

This morning there’s blood all over her chest and I panic (of course). I take a good look and she’s either over preened the area or the mud irritated it a bunch, I don’t know. But the wound is open. Well open, and I can see her breast muscle. Soooo I’ve called the vet, we’ll be rounding her up and taking her in. It’s considered urgent care so it’ll be a bit more expensive, which totally sucks for my pocket, but I’m just glad that they’ll see her.

So. Today’s gonna suck more than it already was (today’s the anniversary of my husband/kiddo’s dad’s passing...)

I’ll update when there’s more.

Sorry guys. I think I botched this one. I didn’t think it’d be a problem because I wasn’t giving her any water to her bottom side. But clearly something was a bad idea.

Agree with @Miss Lydia - don't beat yourself up! Set backs happen, not your fault.

I just feel like it’s all my fault. And we’rengoing To be starting back at one with the process of not letting her flap wings, etc.

Her containment pen has already been repurposed to the ducklings’ brooder (since they’re apparently turkey vultures in size!!)

But! Do you guys think if I contained her wings, that’d be okay? Like I wasn’t keen on it the first time but maybe it’s a possibility for me this time, considering I don’t have something else?

Otherwise I have like a huuuuuge plastic tote that would give her restriction but I think it’d be a nightmare for her.

Okay so Vet looked at it and it will need surgery again, instead of just stitches. She’d (OG) healed the area quite considerably so the vet is optimistic that this time around, with less area mass having to heal, she should heal a little quicker than the first time. The muscle tissue where they’d cut out the necrotic parts has actually healed well and is completely viable. Which is a good thing because she’ll need it... she pulled the muscle away from the bone.

*sigh*

So it needs a surgery again, apparently, and vet already said we’re going to be back at square one with the confinement and/or separation from Patty. She did suggest, as an alternative to being in a dog crate, that I can put a little shirt or sweater on it. She said it would be very annoying to the duck but it could be an alternative since I no longer have my containment section to give her.

So yeah, I was wondering what you guys thought about it. It’s purpose is to restrict her wings from flapping because it uses the breast muscle to do so. So, like before, trying to keep her from popping stitches or messing that up muscle (like she has right now).

I’m still holding on to the fact that they said since it’s a much smaller wound to repair this time, that it should do better.

Because otherwise I’m just down about it all. Vet thinks it was because she was in the mud and playing around and, yes lol, even being humped.

So basically I made it to the last 2 weeks and messed it all up.

How do we know these things.

You might take something like a shirt sleeve that has elasticity to it and make her a coat or a sweater sleeve or ladies panty hose cut to size. any of these may work.
You still may end up putting her into a large tote just because if she manages to get the article off you may not have an alternative. But worth a try.

Omg! Aside from the affirmation that I can squeeze her pretty little self into, this pic helps me think! I can keep her in my kiddos tub! Enough so that I can shop vac out the mess each day, and she’ll be free from humping! I don’t have to shove her into my rottie’s cage which, btw, is a beeeeach to have to squeeze into (no opening on top!) to slide a fighting pekin out of. I have a shower in my room that she can use.

Sorry. I’m a mess. Drinking in the evening (I drink twice a year lol) and thinking about this poor duck. And my poor wallet. And her poor boobies. And back to my wallet. And then to my poor house where the ducklings are stinking it up daily.

Can I also just note how pitiful this poor Pekin baby is in this photo? Lord... poor baby needs a hug (which, knowing ducks, would likely be an undesired thing but I digress). She needs loves.

OG seems to be able to adapt quite well to her new circumstances with a super-attentive caregiver. From your description she doesn't seem to be feeling pain, on the contrary, she appears to relish the new experiences and attention. You have enriched her life -sadly, to the great depletion of your wallet . I feel for you there, my dog just had dental work that I will be paying off in installments!
