what is a friendly rooster?

My cochin (bantam) roos were not people aggressive. They were horny little hen-abusing buttheads, though.

Definitely agree on the OEGB rooster. Good game roosters are the best.

I also like my Leghorn roosters, but I've never had one that wasn't raised in an adult flock, which does make quite a difference in their behaviour.

What I would recommend for a person without an adult flock is to wait until your hens are mostly mature and then to find an older rooster from an established (healthy) flock. You'll get a rooster who knows how the behave himself (because if you get them as chicks, you will go through the teenage hormone stage) and you'll be able to ask how he behaves.

Absolutely! :goodpost:

I think a bantam rooster would be ideal.
I had a bantam dark Brahma that was fantastic.
I also had a bantam Cochin that wasn’t human aggressive at all.
He was a bit of a horn dog as a teenager but they’re all like that at that age.
And I had a partridge Silkie that was also great.
I say “was” because all three died. :hit

I’m currently looking for another bantam roo but I really hope he will survive.
I already have two standard sized roosters but I need a bantam for my bantam hens.
Sounds like a OEGB might be a good choice for me too.
But will he constantly try to fight my two LF roos?

Has anyone experience with Cochins or Brahmas?
I've had two Bantam Cochin roosters. The first was incredibly sweet, but didn't really do his job all that well.
The second is an excellent flock guardian and can be a punk, but is not overtly aggressive towards humans. He really tends to his ladies well. Guards them when they lay in weird places, follows and protects the girls that wander, and comes running when he hears a squawk. He gets the job done. Plus, it looks like they're wearing pants, which is hilarious.

I am going through that right now! My rooster is 5 months old and loves to think that I am a personal attacking bag. :barnie:lau
That’s not a good rooster.
Mine never tried to flog me.
As chicks they were both kind of scared of me and wanted nothing to do with me.
It’s the bold “friendly” male chicks that usually turn into aggressive roosters.

It's hard for me to make a suggestion because I have not had a lot of experience with multiple roosters of one breed except for RIRs and White Leghorns. I have had the most hatchery strain white leghorn roosters out of any other breed and more than half of them were aggressive to humans. It's been a while but I think I have owned 5 or 6 RIR roosters and only one ever attacked a human and only did it once. Other than those two breeds I don't think there is another rooster that I have had more than 3 of in my time of keeping chickens. I have had tons of roosters but like to try out new ones often. I really liked the RIRs so stuck with them for a bit. Hated the WHite leghorns, kept getting them by accident because McMurray does not know how to sex their chicks.
