What Is A Good Backyard Chicken?

What do you want the chickens for? Do you want them for meat, eggs, both, or just for pets?
No rooster is quiet, unless you get a bantam. But, a bantam won't be able to protect the flock. He can watch for dangers and alert the hens if he sees a predator, but he can't fight off a hawk, fox, raccoon, etc. If alerting is enough for you, then get some kind of bantam. If not, then you will have to get some other breed that will be loud.

Bantams are loud too, what they lack in size, they make up in noise!

I've kept many different breeds and one of my favorites and a fairly quiet breed are the Wyandotte's followed closely by Brahma's. Both lay well and are friendly birds.

My bantam rooster hardly makes any noise at all. His crow is so quiet, you wouldn't even know that I have a rooster.

rooster quiet? lol i got nothing but my Buff-Os, Brown ISAs and Barred rock islands are sweet, docile, brown egg laying ladies.

Orpingtons are on the quieter side, as are Plymouth rocks. As @Aapomp831 said, there isn't a such thing as a quiet chicken. But definitely no Leghorns.

lol. The BRs I've had were all really quiet. They hardly ever made a sound!

What breed were they?

A black breasted red cubalaya, a partridge Cochin, and some silver back game cock that we ended up culling bc he was aggressive... all bantams. They may have been just in competition with each other.
