What Is A Good Backyard Chicken?

So I live in the suburbs and I want a quiet chicken. What is a good quiet chicken do you guys recommend? Also I want a rooster that would be quiet but also protect the flock. Again what breed do you guys recommend?

I belive quiet chickens are found right next to the unicorns.
Lol, in all seriousness, while there are some breeds that aren't as vocal, it really depends on the individual chicken.
If your neighborhood won't allow roosters, it's best not to have one, but if you can one, my brahma crows only a few times a day and he lacks the ear piercing shriek of some breeds.
Brahmas are are known to be calm, usually calmer breeds tend to be quieter.

There is no such thing as a quiet chicken, and most definitely no such thing as a quiet rooster.... chickens make a lot of noises to communicate, especially when laying eggs. And roosters crow all day long to make sure everyone on the general vicinity knows that’s his territory and his females.

Orpingtons are on the quieter side, as are Plymouth rocks. As @Aapomp831 said, there isn't a such thing as a quiet chicken. But definitely no Leghorns.

Omg, def not leghorns... I have a love hate relationship with mine; such neurotic little creatures!!!

What do you want the chickens for? Do you want them for meat, eggs, both, or just for pets?
No rooster is quiet, unless you get a bantam. But, a bantam won't be able to protect the flock. He can watch for dangers and alert the hens if he sees a predator, but he can't fight off a hawk, fox, raccoon, etc. If alerting is enough for you, then get some kind of bantam. If not, then you will have to get some other breed that will be loud.

Bantams are loud too, what they lack in size, they make up in noise!

I live in the suburbs too. I've found that barred rocks haven't brought any attention to my house and I did get a rooster to protects my hens too but we got a complaint and had to get rid of him. We have outside cats all around our neighborhood and my girls are pretty protective of each other so they do do good without the rooster. Barred rocks are such sweethearts too they'll fall asleep on your lap. Hope you have good luck

While all chickens will make some noise, especially roosters, my Meyer Hatchery golden buffs are generally quiet (they squawk when they're mad, but even then not loudly). I think that orps are generally a pretty quiet, friendly breed!

Are you allowed to have roosters where you are? There is no ensuring a "quiet" rooster. Some will crow more than others, but any rooster will belt it out if he feels like it.

That said, my Black Australorp pullets are nice and quiet. They make hardly any noise at all.

My BA is my loudest chicken.
