what is BOSS

BOSS is a very inconvenient and expensive way to feed grocery store sunflower oil to poultry.
The other nutrients in the raw sunflower seed is of little value to poultry.

I first tried BOSS about 2 months ago and none of my chickens cared for it. I just bought another bag and mixed it with some corn and now they love it...go figure. Mine eat shell and all and I put some on the ground and some mixed with there crumbles.

I only have 4 chickens, so maybe inconvenience and expense is relative, but I just toss a handful on the ground, which is easy enough. I purchase it from the bulk bins at WinCo and it seems cheap enough...but then again, only 4 birds...

It's not too expensive to me. My local Menards carries a 50# bag for $7. Just a little testimonial, I had a girl that had lost all of the feathers on her back due to a huge rooster that was way too rough on all of the girls. All of the girls slowly but surely recovered but this one BO hen. She was featherless for over a year on her back. Wife had made her a saddle to wear for cold weather and for protection from the other roosters. Now I had given up all hope of her growing them back and I had no idea about the benefits of BOSS. I had never given it to them because I didn't know how beneficial it would be. Well anyways, I bought a small bag (7lb) at TSC that had a hole in bag so they had priced it to sell. What do you know? after only giving it to them for about a week and a half our little hen started growing feathers on her back. I kept giving it to them for treats ever since and my chickens have the nicest, shiniest, feathers I ever seen! Little Curley, the bald back BO hen is fully recovered and just absolutely gorgeous!

I personally would wait until they're older but if you do feed it, make sure that they have gritt as well.

BOSS isn't expensive, and it is very easy to just toss on the ground for your birds to scratch for. Sometimes I throw it on the sawdust in the coop so they will turn it over by scratching. Nothing inconvenient about it at all. Extra protein, too.

Thank you. I do give them grit but maybe I will hold off a bit.

I've seen the 40lb bags at TSC, but they are more like $15 than $5. Even scratch is more than $5........sigh........

I was given 5 x 50lbs bags of BOSS recently in trade for some ducks.........I have started mixing the Boss and scratch 50/50, adding a scoop of dog food and a scoop of sweet feed for every 20lbs or so. My own personal scratch. It is about 50% BOSS, so the girls are happy

I am new to this, and I've been reading this page and they keep mentioning BOSS. Is it the name of the sunflower seed? Up here in northern NH I've never seen sunflower seed at 5;
More like 15, and you feed your chic's dog food? Canned or dry? What is sweet feed? I'm loving the new ways to do things. It's like sitting on the fence chatting w/ the farmer but not getting and sliver's up my back end !

lol But I do feel pretty dumb at times like today!
Thanks ahead of time for any extra work you have to do on the count of me.
Thanks again!
