What is considered basic obedience!?

Hmm, for me basic obedience is different in every situation. What it comes down to, is things that help/make everyday life easier, and safer. As with many here, either down or stay, leave it, and come would be on my list. For the guard dogs (or larger dogs in general, to be honest) , I'd also include good leash manners on that list. Do all the guard dogs here have good leash manners? No. But it would be what I'd prefer.

Handler awareness is another one. I'd call that a skill more than anything else, that's why I haven't really included it. I don't focus too much on how focused the dog is on me. What I do think is absolutely necessary is for them to be aware of where the handler is

Oh yeah mine knows crate as well. And how to potty on command.

I like "hurry up," I used to travel a lot and this kept them from toileting in the public areas before I got them to the Pet Designated areas which often seem to be Waaaaay over theeeere away from the parking spots!

Mine know the typical commands (more or less) but for me, basic obedience is instructions I give for day-to-day living:

“Go away” - get your nose out of my face
“Hurry up” - self explanatory
“Move it” - get out of my way quickly
“Sit yourself down” - go lay down somewhere, stop bugging me
“Quiiiiet! Shhh” - Walk quietly, don’t bark, don’t jump around
“Quit talking” - Stop barking
“Pay attention” - go back around the pole
“Jump!” Self explanatory

There’s others, I’m sure, but I can’t think of them. I didn’t sit down and teach them these, either, they just learned them over time. It makes life much easier!

Car manners are also important, you don't want your dog interfering with your driving. Safety first.

Tucker is kenneled in the car because of car sickness. But thats important to

My dogs aren't very well trained, but they do know things that I just consider manners and those have become more apparent now I have a completely untrained 3yr old who doesn't understand the things all the others do
Stopping jumping on people on command is a big one as I'm convinced I own part kangaroos.
Walking through doors, gates, in and out of crates when told to.
Walking on a leash.
Recall (No, some of mine are not good at this ).
Surprisingly only one of my dogs knows sit... I used to do conformation showing and had multiple people tell me not to teach them to sit.

That makes sense!!! I’ve heard not to teach them sit for conformation too.

Yeah, best not to. In 4h showmanship it was hard to teach Denver to stand.
