We adopted this girl a couple of months ago because her former flock was beating her up to the point she was plucked pretty bare and had some open wounds from the other girls. Previous owners didn't know what she was, but she lays a dark brown egg and has feathered legs, so I'm thinking Marans or Marans mix.

Ideas?

Poor baby.

She doesn't look to be pure Marans, as her eye color is wrong and body shape is a bit off (which could be from loss of feathers due to hazing), but she could be a Blue Marans mix.

There are other ways to get a blue bird with dark eggs and feathers, but Marans comes to mind first.

Has she got the start of a beard there? She could be an Olive-egger project bird, with Ameraucana or EE in there?

No beard. I think it's just the angle and how her feathers are coming back in.

She looks small.
Could possibly be blue Cochin??
She's the size of a barred rock. She looks like a blue cochin, but she's only got feathers on her legs and lays a very dark egg. She does carry herself more like a cochin though. maybe that's the cross... Who knows?

Yes...I agree she is small...which is how I also know she isn't pure Marans.

If she is heavily foot feathered, I also suspicion Cochin, as her appearance has Cochin.

But the dark of the egg...somewhere she's got somebody that has dark eggs. Possibly a bantam Welsummer even? Who knows.
