what is that hanging out the back end of two of my newly hatched chick

two out of eighten chicks had stuff hanging out of their bottom. they did not make it. what was that and why was it there?
 
Sounds like they still had the yolk attached. I'm sorry they didn't make it.

An attached yolk doesn't always mean the baby won't make it, but sometimes it's a symptom of other problems. Normally, the chick/duckling will absorb the remainder of the yolk right after pipping and before zipping, but sometimes some of it is left behind and remains attached through the "umbilical cord" (not sure what the structure is called in birds--but it's purpose is basically the same as the human umbilical cord). I'm glad the other sixteen are doing fine.

I just experienced this.. I didn't think she was gonna make it.. she had a little sac of yolk I assume.. she slept for a day.. I took her out at one point and bathed her and fluffed her to keep her warmer.. The next day she was up and walking about with the others.. I call her Dingle Berry as the sac has dried up to a raisin size and hopefully its gonna close off right on the inside and the dingle will fall off..
