What is the best way to hatch shipped eggs????

Oh, and I have an internal pip on one Tolbunt. .hehehe, I'm like a kid peeking at gifts before Christmas. .lol.. I'm pretty sure 2, not just 1 quit around day 18 or 19..I've left them be, eggtopsies will tell me in a day or so..so I'm putting it all on 4 eggs..huge letdown from the 18 I started with, but I will be overjoyed with anything at this point.

That's how I feel! 2/7, so far and I'm just so happy with 2 babies! I agree with what you said, I could tell when it was 2 soon to intervene and then after the chick did 90% I could see something was wrong cus he just couldn't push the egg apart, it was almost all zipped! He's doing great! I keep calling the babies "he" & "guy"...I have 3 boys and am not used to girls, but I guess in the chicken world we're kinda rooting for females! Lol. If you have internal pips, I bet by morning you'll have external ones!! So exciting!! Good luck on 4 fluffies! Will you do the float test on the others? If so, on what day? Or what day do you eggtopsie? I still have one egg that hasn't pipped yet? I wonder if I can candle quick when I put the others in the brooder??? Do you think that will shrink wrapped it??

I can't wait to see how many hatch! I'm using egg cartons with the bottoms cut out because their air cells are still iffy

I'm probably not the best person to ask if you should candle because I'm always in my hatcher and break all the rules. . But in my experience, no a quick candle won't be enough to shrink wrap them, especially with a good bator (I use styrofoam LGs)..but mind you, I have mine set up in a teeny bathroom and I keep the room close to 80° and the bathtub full of hot water when I am messing around in there..it's like a sauna..I strip down within minutes of being in there..lol..
I have had eggs hatch as late as day 25, but I will candle as soon as the other finish doing whatever they're going to do then I will make a smaller hole in the air cell area of the shell and check for signs of life (I usually use a qtip dipped in hot water and wet the membrane..if it's breathing I can see it. Then I'll go from there..if it's alive and looks veiny, I'll wrap it in a damp paper towel and let it cook a lil longer, if the veins look absorbed, I'll see if I can find a beak bUT usually if so, by then it's too late but I'll break him an air hole and then give him more time to cook and progress on its own.. this is where those cursed skulls come in again bc sometimes I find a perfect chick thst couldn't get it's head in a position to make a hole in the inner membrane and suffocated.
Life would be so much easier if we bred for clear shells instead of blue or green..
Oh and I rarely use the float test..only when I stumble upon one of my black banty hens nests.. I find one about every 40 eggs or so and I've gotta weed out the old from the fresh..she's penned now and so mad she's not laid in 2 weeks.

Yay!!
I tried the upright method for my last hatch of shipped with wonky air cells and had great luck..11 of 14 that went into lockdown. . I'm sticking with it, that's for sure :)
Best of luck! I'll be stalking the thread for pics and hope to have some of my own to share

Hi everyone! I read the whole thread tonight because I'm getting my first shipped eggs tomorrow and don't know when to put them in. They are not silkies though but a variety :) but I am assuming the process is the same for all shipped eggs... Right? Lol Thank you for this thread :) I also have 9 Cochin eggs approaching lockdown on Sunday and read you use a carton after taking them out of turner. Does it matter styrofoam or cardboard? And why do you cut the bottoms out? Can someone post a pic of one so I know how much to cut out? Thanks :)

I put pans of steaming hot water out around the incubator before I opened it. The egg that didnt hatch is the one that had a weird air cell to begin with but by day 18 it looked like it had straightened itself out. What I saw when I candled was crazy!!! I hope these pictures give you a little idea...because I don't know how to describe it...I really think it's dead.
