What is the most humane way to kill a chicken?

If I can get my ex to let me use the digital camera I would love to show it. It is a trash can (w/lid) with a hole cut in the top. A flexible hose that connects to my car exhaust and then goes into the top of the trash can.

I'm going to do something with a 5 gallon bucket (I'm hoping it will be less time to gas up).

MayberrySaint, I'm also wondering how / what you attach to the tailpipe that doesn't melt the hose. Also, what type of hose do you use?

I think a 5 gallon bucket may stress out the bird as the exhaust will be blowing on the bird. In my trash can, I inserted a cardboard baffle halfway down. This way the bird is not in direct contact with the heated exhaust. It takes about 5 min for the bird to be unconscious.
The metal hose I found at our local Lowes. Not sure what it is used for...some type of heating duct I suppose.

How about draining their blood out?

1. Stick a needle/syringe apparatus into their veins.
2. Drain their blood out as fast as possible.
3. The chicken will die painlessly from not having enough blood.

the easiest way is two nails in a board/stump/whatever and a hatchet. hanging them upside down and slicing their jugular is a little cleaner, but the stump is by far the easiest, but you gotta hit it like you mean it.

I agree, the axe is the fastest and most humane method of euthanasia. Some of these ideas sound very scary to me..I shiver at the thought of chickens to have to go through some of these suggestions in their last moments.

I fully understand the fear of blood and have to say that we butchered our first chickens this year for meat (which I swore I would never do). But we did 31 of them using the axe method and I saw for myself exactly how fast it was and to be completely honest, there was not much blood. I had nightmares fearing the blood we were going to see and it was nothing like that. And I felt much better after the process knowing that it went quickly for them. If I had to euthanise a pet chicken, I would choose that method again, no question about it. It's not about what makes it easier for me, but what makes it easier for them to end their suffering.

2. chop its head off

3. drain its blood with a syringe/needle

4. gas it
