what is the proper etiquette for garage sales..dogs acceptable or not?

I don't take my dogs to other people's homes and don't appreciate it when people bring their dogs to my home either. I make an exception at Christmas when my dad comes down for the day with his poodle. But his dog stays crated except for pottie breaks. My dogs do not like other dogs and are very territorial. We live in the country. They don't go to doggie parks and learn how to play nice with others. They play nice among themselves and know that part of their job here is not allow strange dogs on the property. So it's hard for them to accept the scent of my dad's dog being all over the place.

For the record, I don't much care for people bringing their bratty kids here either. Why aren't kids nice and well behaved anymore? They scream, throw stuff in my koi ponds (even after being told not to), chase my little chihuahua because she is SOOOO cute, demand attention, walk in flower beds, pick stuff, Don't wipe their feet, shriek for no reason, the list goes on and on. At least it's legal to crate a dog. Crating bratty children is generally frowned upon.

My 3 year old grandson is NOT a bratty child. He is quiet, respectful, is gentle with my dogs, does not throw stuff in the koi ponds (although I do take him back to the big pond and let him throw rocks), asks before picking flowers (he can have all he wants because he DOES ask), and he takes his shoes off at the door! If more kids were like him I'd open a day care center!

It seems this topic boils down to two types of dog owners #1 Responsible, conscientious of others, mild and courteous. #2 Irresponsible, self absorbed, bold and uncouth.

I would never take any animal to someone else's land sale or not nor would I thwart my obsessions on someone with the attitude of entitlement If I felt compelled to do so I would ask first like this"Say I noticed there were no pets here do you mind if I bring mine" which noticing no one else had them would be the first clue, being aware and mindful of others would avoid alot of misunderstandings.

Comparing kids to pets? Ingred Newkirk did that once and it cost her dearly. Just my opinions.

wow, so I did not bring my dog this past weekend and I didn't see anyone else with thier dog either.
I knew there would be a wide ranges of ideas regarding this and that's why I never knew what the right thing to do was. Thank y'all for your opinions. I can see that even if you are a dog lover, having other people's dogs at your house may not be cool. you see..I always encourage people to bring thier dogs to my house, but I have a real nice dog with a decent sized yard. But I never thought about if your dog was not nice to other dogs.

i have seen MUCH more little monster kids than little monster dogs...

That's because you can't tie your kid to a tree for an afternoon if you have things to do

No its because now discipline means sending your kids to there room to think about how to get away with it next time.....

I walk my dog and love to take him places.

I also like to stop and look at a yard sale and see what is there, much easier done when not watching my dog.

But I hate going to Home Depot and looking for the box with out the "yellow water damage" because it seems that is where everyone wants to walk their dog-well until recently when I hear they were fined for allowing it and are no longer allowing dogs. And don't get me started on the teen with the puppy on a leash dragging it through the Super Market the other day!

Service dogs for the blind etc are taught not to poop and pee when ever they pass a box/display.

As a neighbor, I might not want to tell you that your dog is not welcome because after all we are going to be neighbors long after the sale. But imposing your dog might also mean other shoppers leave.

If I saw something I was interested in, I would ask the seller if they could hang on to it for me long enough to take my dog home and come back to shop.

I once took mine on a walk in a dog friendly park and bent over to take a picture of a flower, a pair of little kids (their nanny was sitting on a bench watching) came running and screaming at the dog. My dog is cute, he looks like a cuddly stuffed animal. But when a screaming child comes running up on me with my back turned.......he is going to protect me from them. I would not want to chance an encounter like that at a neighbors garage sale.

Well, I have had yard/garage sales and have had people bring their dogs and tell me their dogs are well-behaved and respectful. While that may be true, you have to bear in mind there may be other people there who might be afraid of dogs, particularly people with small children. And even a well-behaved dog can knock over $30 worth of glass with a wagging tail.

I would not appreciate anyone bringing a dog to my yard sale. Or any other animal, for that matter. If you have a nice dog and are my neighbor, bring your dog over to visit when you're not shopping at my yard sale & we'll sit and have tea, and I'll even have treats for your doggie! But people should not take their dogs shopping unless it is a service animal. There's just too many things that can go wrong.

I am going to bring something up that was briefly touched on earlier-homeowner's insurance.
We have Golden Retrievers-I can and do trust them with ANYBODY! When I have a garage sale, I keep my dogs penned up. I would not want someone to bring their dog here for a garage sale either. I am the one who would get stuck with a lawsuit or insurance problems because one person brought their "gentle, well-behaved dog who wouldn't hurt a flea" and somebody else had a 2-year-old who stepped on the dog's tail and got bit. ANY dog can bite-a dog that is properly raised, trained, and socialized is MUCH LESS likely to bite, but if he is teased/tormented/abused that could very easily change. I would not take the risk of it happening on my property.
Another thing-I raise Goldens. My dogs are very valuable to me, more than just pets. Somebody else may have a dog that is carrying Brucellosis or some other highly contagious disease. Brucellosis would mean the end of my breeding program, and possibly the death of all of my dogs.
