What is the purpose of backyard chickens?

I'm not understanding what the issues are that are so bad.
For specific information about chickens you go to the index and look at the section that is appropriate to the need you have at the moment. The recipe section is for recipes, rambling is for , well, rambling, hatching is for incubating and hatching...so on.
I realize people want answers and want them right now but everyone has their own schedule too. I know for me, spring is a BUSY time of year. It is a season of the least amount of time I can dork around on the internet.

I'm sure if they ever decide they want a tiny board they could do that ROTFL:D

Edited to add: I think that the huge number of people that participate, chicken related or not, are a testimony to the kind folks that run this site. So many people enjoy being here that it has grown into a huge family. Sure, there are lots of topics loading by the minute but if you take your time, I usually get my ?? awnsered and I am really a newbie at chickies.

I agree with GaNewChick, a forum could suffer if its all about getting your questions answered.
You may notice that there is basically only one area of 'nonchicken' subjects, which includes the random ramblings thread, where there are many other areas with chicken info. Alot of people can't get their social life satisified in 'the real world', BYC offers that to people while having a common bond to fall back on. I honestly don't see it when people think BYC is all about 'gabbing' and 'cliques'.
A little socialization doesn't hurt, and no one needs to take part in it, for those who think their social lives in 'real life' is good enough.

You don't have to open a thread that does not interest you.

You never know...someone just may crochet a sweater for their chicken.

Or knit a chicken saddle! Or an egg cozy!!!

edit: maybe donate isn't a good choice of words. I'll trade a small drawing of your chicken!

Sometimes I go to the unanswered section to see if there are unanswered questions that I could possibly help with. I would say about 90 percent of those unanswered questions could have easily been answered by using the search option.

Sometimes I see that they are new and may not know about the learning center or the search option. I then reply by telling them to please use the search option and learning center and if after doing that they still do not have an answer to there question then create a post.

Are we to lazy to do a search first ? There is a ton of information on just about every topic on this forum. I use the search option always before asking questions. No one wants to answer questions that have been asked every week.

Nifty, the mods and ALL THE MEMBERS work very hard to keep BYC a family friendly forum and they do a great job in doing so - let's try to remember that. Differences will happen, but its how we handle them that matters most.

Just want to throw another positive vote in here. I feel that this forum is very well run, and really appreciate the work the mods etc. do.

It had occurred to me as well that a few more categories might help, like breaking down the hatching thing. It figures that it was already being looked at. Just another example of the tremendous amount of effort that is put into this.

Actually, it is rather amazing that something this great is free....

I have not posted during this entire thread, but I am going to put in my $10 (inflation) now.

We are a diverse group, but no one should feel unwelcome here if they follow the rules and participate in a friendly manner. I personally rarely go into certain sections, even as moderator. They simply do not appeal to me. If the title of a thread causes me to tense up immediately, I may not even open it. That is my choice and it is yours. Just because I never go into games does not mean I have no sense of humor, but I happen to not like that type stuff. Some people seem to only post in the social sections and rarely, if ever, go into the "meat and potatoes" sections related to chicken husbandry. As long as they follow our guidelines here, they can do that, if they like.

Some people are serious, some are happy-go-lucky. We have all manner of opinions here and differing levels of experience and I think many of us can agree to disagree most of the time.

The goal of Backyard Chickens is a "chicken in every yard". There are all manner and styles of chicken-keeping. Some consider them pets, some consider them more livestock and have different methods of dealing with their needs. For the most part, we all love chickens and that is what we have in common. Beyond that, we may be as different as night and day, but that's when we should agree to disagree and concentrate on what we all love, our flocks. Take what you need and want from BYC, leave what you don't and have fun.
