What could be the cause of this purple and swollen wattle on our buff Orpington hen? She is 4 years old this Spring. We have not seen any other symptoms. I did see a gray bump on her neck between the wattles in the morning, but I couldn’t do anything at that moment with her. I went this afternoon and it was gone, but the wattle is still purple and swollen. I thought the bump looked like a gray full tick. But I couldn’t look at it very closely - my daughter brought her into the house where I was cooking and I had guests:rolleyes:😂 so I had her bring the chicken back outside.
Now I need all the help I can get.
I thought it was a tick, but it was gone later whatever that was. And the hen still has swollen and purple wattle. So then I thought maybe Fowl cholera from what I quickly looked up.
What is it? What caused it? Cure or treatment? Outlook? What should I do with or for the rest of my flock? Prevention?

This is what a tick bite can do to the wattles. It can be swollen and bluish, where the tick secretes a blood thinner into the tissue, and it becomes swollen and bruised. You could give a small dose of Benadryl to see if it helps the swelling go down. She should eventually get over this and back to normal.

Benadryl dosage is 2-4 mg per kg (every 2.2 pounds) once or repeated in 12 hours. If she is 5 pounds she could have 10-20 mg orally. I would probably give half of a 25 mg tablet, or about 12.5 mg. Let us know how she gets along.

Oh my gosh thank you so much!! This is such great news!! We were thinking this was something else entirely and would have a completely different outlook. I will be sure to follow this advice. Thank you so much for responding!!

Let us know how she is doing tomorrow. Ticks can transmit some not so nice diseases, so I would try to treat the coop, possibly with permethrin spray.

This morning the other wattle is purple and starting to swell. I am going now to get the Bendryl, but I wanted to check if this is still consistent with a tick bite since now the other wattle is discolored and swelling?

Sorry that I just saw your latest post, but yes, I think that sometimes happens. I recall seeing pictures where one wattle is blue and the other side may be partially blue. I will look for a similar thread with a picture.
