What is this? Eye swelling? With picture.

Oh my. That is not good. Keep treating and please let me know if the Michigan State University will test your birds.
All hope is not lost. I am so sorry you are going through this. Believe me, I know what you are going through.

Some birds have more pronounced skin around their eyes. Are you sure non of your other birds were.like that before? It is very strange that it would spread in one day and be a illness..not impossible...but odd. Is their anything you dusted them all with or sprayed around all of them? No one is acting sick?

Well, we figured out what it is. The diseased birds are gone and the rest are getting vaccinated this week. Thankfully, it is something that can be vaccinated against!!!

What was it?

Could it have been fungal at all? I have been treating my 9 with Oxine and a humidifier for what looks like your eyes. swollen and a few other symptoms. It has seemed to clear it up rather nicley in a week. I was scared to death it was something contagious and deadly. Seemed mold food outside that had added up over a year was the culprit.

What did it turn out to be? It would be good if we knew what it was so that people who come across this thread in the future would have an idea of what a similar situation could be.

Mine ended up to be fowl pox. One look at the scabs that developed on their combs and they figured it out right away. If you look up fowl pox in pictures, you will see what it looks like. The eyes started with the swelling and then it spread to include small scabs on their combs.

Hi,
Is there anything that can cure the fowl pox ?
Thanks.

No. It is a virus, so antibiotics don't work on it. Once they have it, you have to let the disease run its course. You can vaccinate against it when they are young to prevent them from ever catching it, but when they're older, it just runs its course. It only kills a few adult chickens, but if chicks catch it from the adults, it has a VERY high mortality rate in young birds.
