I might not have a clue what I am talking about, but I noticed that all chicks have some sort of hole or spot like that (although small) where their umbilical cord was...or whatever attaches them to their yolk or whatever...I'm assuming it's like an umbilical cord since I've never studied the anatomy of a baby chick.
To me, it looks to be in the exact spot where that is when they are babies, and maybe some just get infected or whatever. All of my chicks have them, and they all have like hard, dried stuff attached to them. I'll have to go check the bigger birds, maybe some heal up well like our belly buttons, and some maybe don't heal as well. Any thoughts on this anyone?
I was checking a hen for mites one day and found a hard little mass that looked similar to that in shape and color. I was able to remove it with a little pressure and it was inside a feather duct. I assumed it was an ingrown feather. After I removed it I found that all of it wasn't hard. The part that was below the skin was actually pretty soft and it stunk really bad like the inside of a belly button. I know this may seem a little gross but that is all I have to compare it to.
At any rate, I don't see the mass removing itself. It looks really infected around the outside and left untreated your chicken could become septic, when the infection enters the blood stream. I would say it needs to be cleaned out really well and some type of antiseptic applied. I would also start some antibiotic and keep her seperate from the others. Definately use gloves while doing all of this. Good Luck.

I got that, but if it could happen to a broiler and to a turkey as someone else posted, I'm sure it could happen to a hen.
ETA: Look up keel cysts

The name bot fly is used for more than one type of parasite. The horse bot fly is gasterophius intestinalis and there is one that gets under skin that is the dermatobia hominis. There are undoubtedly others.
You need to clean it out as everyone else suggested. There is the icky black stuff that is a drawing sauve. It is an antibotic but also draws out infection. I think the real name is ickamethol or something like that you'll have to ask for it at the counter of your drug store. Make sure whatever you do wear some protective gloves and change your clothes(and wash them) after you have cleaned her incase it is staph.
