Cleaning, draining, and antibiotics seem to be the recommended treatment for keel cysts.

It was mentioned on some sites that these occur because of an injury or bruise; perhaps your bird’s wing injury and this issue are related.

It's a cyst formed at the end of the breastbone, the part that would be between the bone and the ground can get inflamed from sitting, now that I think about it it could also be a breast button, which is a sore caused by poor coop conditions, high ammonia, wet litter which is what I was referring to when I said that broilers get them from sitting around in bad conditions.

I have no idea what that could be. It almost looks like something inside and the skin is stying to heal over it. Can you soak it and try to get that gunk out of that hole then maybe pack it and keep it clean?

The part that was below the skin was actually pretty soft and it stunk really bad like the inside of a belly button.

Sorry, but I just gotta ask. Maybe I missed something along the way, but in my 38 years, I never managed to learn that belly buttons smell bad. Mine doesn't, my kids don't, my husband's doesn't....if I saw a smelly belly button I would be very worried.

As for the poor chicken, I hope you are able to get her to heal. That looks frightening. In fact, gives me chills. I would definitely try cleaning it, though. Good luck.​

I would separate her and offer her a box (cardboard filled with shavings>>make sure it is low-sided as you do not want her resting her breast with the wound on any edges of the box ) and not allow her to roost anymore till this wound area has cleared up (>by the way check your roosts and make sure the edges are sanded and rounded off so they have no "edge")
Clean the wound area with sterile saline (you can make this yourself by boiling 1/4 tsp salt in a quart of water for five minutes >make fresh daily) and use a neo after).

UPDATE:

We tried to clean it out the best we could, it did stink bad. I have a pretty strong stomach and I was gaging. Anyway, we got most of the gunk out. She really did not want us messing with her. The swelling seems to be going down and more stuff keeps coming out.

I sprayed blu-kote on there to hopefully keep any infection from happening.

I am leaving today for a dance clinic with my daughter for a few days. My husband will be watching her and I will update as soon as I get back, or while I am gone if he calls me with updates.

just wondering if you are back home yet? and if so hows the chicky doing? It's hard to get the image of her owie out of my head. I have a weak stomach and wonder how you would go about cleaning that thing daily? hope all is well
