What is this nasty goo on chick? Warning: unpleasant picture.

Hi this chick pipped and made a hole but didn't seem to be getting any further so I thought I would 'help' it out, it's wing was stuck tight to it's head (although I have been trying to keep the humidity up) so I don't think it would have made it with interference anyway.
It's the 21st day and we have already hatched seven healthy chicks so far.

Anyway what is this horrible stuff, is it unabsorbed egg yolk or what? It's kind of greenish and slimy looking. The chick was alive when I took the pic and I stuck it back in the incubator, I guess there is not much hope for it though?


Update: Three hours later and it is still alive and reacting to noise, although I haven't seen it's eyes open yet and I did try to make sure that they weren't glued shut with fluff.

it's still alive and moving around a bit, reacts to noises.

Just leave it too rest and get stronger...It needs to absorb the yolk and then hopefully it perks up...

Yeah I might have tried to help too soon, it is only my second hatch it is in the incubator still. So is that green slime the yolk? It didn't smell bad.

Yes all that goo is normal...Is it still attached to the egg by its umbilical ?...That will dry up and fall off..

When hatching correctly your empty eggshells will all look like they have all been cut in half at the equator.

Baby chicks, in fact baby anythings are born with a mucus coating.

I don't see unabsorbed yolk in the pic. Just looks to me like humidity may have been a bit high for this particular chick, and had some excess goo. How's the chick doing now?

He is not doing too bad Had a couple of chicks hatched after him that are more lively and coordinated, but he is moving enough now for me to think he probably will survive.
