Ok here’s the entire box, I thought showing the whole thing would make it too obvious, but now I think you're right, I should have showed this picture and asked what the black thing was.

So the generator, is called a magneto, in this case it's a 5 bar magneto... the compartment below it held batteries and the magneto charged the batteries, etc.

Ours just rings the bell, I've always thought it would fun to find another and hook them up as an intercom... but probably never will.
