What is this ?

Yeh good point.

Oooo - what colors do snake and lizard eggs come out as? Maybe whatever left it wasn't one of your chickens
oh no i would hate to think it was a snake or lizard near your chickens

I am grateful for all the interest as these are my first hens and things have not gone very smooth so far. One Java has stopped laying in May, the Wyandotte in June, the other Java still lays, between periods of broodiness that is. So now I have that "thing".

To respond to your hypotheses ; my hens do not like tomatoes is any shape or form, so there goes that possibility.

I had not thought about snakes. So I checked the coop very carefully as they give me the creeps. Nothing moved, or slithered so I guess it is not that. I also checked online for snake eggs. They seem mostly white.

Given that my Java has major loose poop. Could these two be linked? I broke down and bought some Wazine 17 which I will start tomorrow. Just trying to figure the dosage for 3 hens. I also need to check online for how long I need to give it to them. I have resisted that as it feels like overkill. But now that I have this "thing" maybe it is time to face whatever that poor hen is dealing with.

Thanks for all the suggestions, please keep them coming.

Yay, me too. I cannot handle snakes, their slithering makes my skin crawl. I haven't seen anything yet. I don't know if they come out at night (creepy....) or if they could harm my hens. I guess they could go after the eggs, but since they are not laying .... or maybe the snake is eating the eggs...

Here is a can of worms (no pun intended) that I did not want to open. I have to check which kind of snake we can have here in Southern California. I live in the suburb, but close to a green belt and my garden is on the wild side. It used to be a wild life refuge, before my hens ate most of the green that is.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/655767/blood-red-yolk-shell-less-egg ?? It looks similar (but not the same) and has a strange "navel" thing there at the bottom of it...not sure what all those veins are though.

So those who said it could just be a shell less egg might be right but...doesn't explain that strange "appendage".

says the reddish brown 'things' with appendages were laid due to a prolapsed oviduct inside the hen?

I'm just throwing things out there - I don't know what it is at all nor do I pretend to...but...the eggs on that site have those weird 'navel' looking things on them, too.

Thank you very much for your concern. You are very helpful. I will check this prolapsed oviduct thing.

Reading the links, she could also have an infection. Her smashing liquid poop worries me. I noticed there is something looking like fleshy stuff in it.

Tonight she is not roosting on the higher perch with the other one like she normally does. I will keep a close eye on her tomorrow.

VERY INTERESTING LINKS THANKS

Thanks for your concerns Happy Chooks. There is no difference.

I put the Wyandotte (Dexter) in the dog crate for a "time out" as she was going after the Java (Molnut) I had just reintegrated with the two other girls (Dexter and Nuggets). While in there, she let out a big runny poop, although without the fleshy things I saw in the sick Java (Nuggets) poop.

I use the dog crate every times the Java (Molnut) gets broody. She spends 2-3 days in the dog crate and seems to snap out of it, although not for that long since she has beed broody 5 times over the 9 months I have had my girls.

Anyhow, I think I am going to use the Wazine17 today. When dried up the fleshy things in Nuggets poop look like worms. I have never used it and am a little nervous as we are dealing with several issues here (the mysterious "thing"). So I hope I am doing the right thing.

Maybe the poop issue is linked to the "thing".
