IVE GOT TO GO WITH THE POST BELOW IT DOES LOOK LIKE ONE OF THOSE"oh no i would hate to think it was a snake or lizard near your chickens"![]()
Yay, me too. I cannot handle snakes, their slithering makes my skin crawl. I haven't seen anything yet. I don't know if they come out at night (creepy....) or if they could harm my hens. I guess they could go after the eggs, but since they are not laying .... or maybe the snake is eating the eggs...
Here is a can of worms (no pun intended) that I did not want to open. I have to check which kind of snake we can have here in Southern California. I live in the suburb, but close to a green belt and my garden is on the wild side. It used to be a wild life refuge, before my hens ate most of the green that is.
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/655767/blood-red-yolk-shell-less-egg ?? It looks similar (but not the same) and has a strange "navel" thing there at the bottom of it...not sure what all those veins are though.
So those who said it could just be a shell less egg might be right but...doesn't explain that strange "appendage".
This contains very graphic pictures:

says the reddish brown 'things' with appendages were laid due to a prolapsed oviduct inside the hen?
I'm just throwing things out there - I don't know what it is at all nor do I pretend to...but...the eggs on that site have those weird 'navel' looking things on them, too.
