WHAT is wrong with my hens EYE!

I dont have an avian vet in my area. I have looked.
Do i just find the nearest avian vet and see if he can come out and take a look?
Culling sounds extreme to me too, but i have been slowly losing birds for the last year. I had another die last week. I didnt even notice anything wrong with her eye. Just walked outside and she was dead underneath the roosting bars.
What exactly does oxine do?

Oxine is just a disinfectant. It kills viral, fungal and bacterial microbes. Here is a link for you to read: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=562407

Every
state has a dept who's job it is to monitor contagious diseases in livestock. If you contact them with your concerns, they will test a few of your birds. If you live close to them, they usually send someone over to your house and do throat swabs on maybe 5 of your birds. If you are rural, they may have you either come to them or meet them somewhere halfway. Do a google search for Georgia state vet, or your county's name and poultry. I will see if I can find a link to start you in the right direction.

OK found this, not sure how updated it is...but it is a start.

Ok where would i buy the oxine?
I will look into this disease so i can find out some more information.
Do you know if turkeys and ducks can catch the disease?
Is this disease spread through the air? Will chickens in a separate pen about 20 feet away catch it?
Thank you so much for all your help!!!

When I had a problem I e-mailed my state vet with my concerns and my telephone number. A couple of days later they called me and asked questions about my flock and symptoms. The vet sent a tech out to swab 5 of my birds. Since I live in the boonies, I met her about 40 miles from my home. She did 2 sets of swabs on each of the 5 birds I took with me. She sent them to 2 different labs for 2 different kinds of tests. About a week later I received 1 report and the following week the next. The state vet sent me a letter with contact info in case I had questions or wanted more advice. The whole thing was free.....well the state taxes I have paid for the past zillion years paid for it.

If it turns out to be something scarey, like avian flu or Exotic newcastle etc. They will take your flock. But, I figured that if it was a horrid disease I needed to cull anyway and the help would be great. In my case it turned out to be minor and they just suggested some antibiotics. They also sent me a calendar and packet on avian diseases and Backyard biosecurity.

here is your state vets e-mail address again : [email protected];

Good luck and keep updating!!

Since we don't know exactly what the problem is....who knows if it is contagious??
That is my point. Find out for sure what you are dealing with first.

Oxine can be purchased at several vet/livestock supply places. Revival and Lambert Vet are 2 that I know of. Google Oxine and you will find several on line places. The link I gave you lists several some with prices and links. Do not use the activator. Just the diluted oxine.

Ok thank you very much. I will send an email i guess. I was actually going to get a pair of light brahmas today. Would it be ok for me to still get them if i keep them separate from the rest of the chicken?

Up to you. I probably wouldn't. If you do....house them as far away from your flock as possible. at least 100ft...300ft would be much better. You will need to scrub and change clothes if going from one pen to the other (especially shoes). Do not share equipment. Use as perfect biosecurity as possible!!

I am going to tractor supply to get either some tylan or duramycine.
Which one do you think would be best? Tylan is injectible and duramycine is put in water correct?
I dont even know where to inject the needle in the chicken. Someone gave me link to the dosages for these two but somehow i lost it.
Which one of these do you think would be best? Or should i get both?

The hen is even worse this morning and is showing signs of very labored breathing.

you don't have to inject the tylan (although i hear it works quicker that way) I put 1/2cc of it on some bread and the chicken gobbles it up. did that for 4 days and my eye problem was solved. I'm looking into the oxine though since I still hear sneezes from my little flock
