What is your favorite duck breed?

I love Welsh Harlequins the most followed closely by Rouens, then Magpies. I have a swarm of WH ducks and they are so calm compared to the other breeds I've had. Mine are excellent layers and are fairly quiet. My Cayugas are the loudest and the most skittish, but they are incredible egg layers. My friendliest duck is my Rouen, and she is HUGE. I'd imagine them being a good choice if you are wanting a dual purpose bird. My Magpie is my quiet duck. She's a great layer, and is so sweet and curious. She's a doll.

I love my little call ducks, but they are not a good choice if your primary goals are eggs and meat. They fit under the "fun to watch and befriend" category. :D

Muscovies are my favorite! They are so adorable and have amazing personalities. :)

I've been doing some research on Khaki Campbell ducks lately, and everywhere I read, they're eggcellent layers! I've read that on average they lay 280-300 eggs a year which is even better than your average chicken! I would like to add some to my flock if I can find a good source to get them from. :yesss:
We have one. Sooooo yappy! Skittish. Never stops eating. Adorable! Only 5 weeks old but love her. I hear people who like muscovies become completely partial to them! I am quite interested in them.

No one’s voted for Rouen ducks yet? They’re friendly, curious, beautiful (think voluptuous mallard), calm, and very cold tolerant. They also lay quite well! They get 1 point docked for having excessively loud QUACKS!

Muscovy ducks get my second vote. They were docked a couple of small points for being less cold tolerant and because I currently have an excessively broody hen who has to be physically removed from her (empty) nest multiple times daily to remind her to eat, bathe, and have fun. But I do love their personalities. My white Muscovy, who hates to fly as she sucks at it, recently discovered that I would carry her back to the barn at night if she was too far away. Now, she asks to be carried every night. :idunno

When they were ducklings and teenaged ducks, I couldn’t touch either ‘Scovy. Now, they’ve tamed up nicely :love That being said, certain ducks are more than capable of making it to the barn on their own and shouldn’t have to be carried!! :barnie

Ah, I missed your post! Another vote for the Rouen! :wee

I think that is absolutely cute!

I am going to stick up for the Khaki Campbell’s. I love mine! If skiddish means they will run quickly when a hawk flies over, great (ok they will also run if a trash bag flies over). They also run when my year old Golden Retriever chases them, my one Welsh Harlequin freezes. Fortunately for her, my dog only enjoys the chase.
My Welsh Harlequin is beautiful but more stand-offish than my Khakis. She is the only one who won’t eat from my hand. I did spend more time with the khakis wnen they were babies though.
I have a hard time believing that the other breeds lay as many eggs. My oldest hens are three years old and have given me an egg a day pretty much since they started laying. They even continued through the winter months. They only took a few weeks off for the first time this year, in early spring, to molt.

Oh I love my KC but skittish is for sure! I come NEAR the pen she runs like I am swinging a bat. But that is the only one I have so not really a breed definition lol
