What is Your Idea of the Perfect Farm Dog

I want to thank all of you for your input and answers to my question about the perfect farm dog. I checked out ALL the breeds and dogs that ya'll suggested. I want to be sure that the next dog I get will be right for us. After researching Pyrenees and Anatolians (last ones on my list), I just googled "farm dog", and there they were..the farm dogs I remembered from my childhood. My uncle had dogs like these! They're collie/shepherd mixes descended from the scottish collies. Check them out!! I have found some listed in NC Ag Review, and I'm going home this weekend to check them out. One thing I know now, there is no "perfect" dog, except the one that fits YOU. Wish me luck!!

i have to say Shetland sheep Dogs. They are wonderful little dogs who do their job as a farm dog, but as a family pet as well. i should kno, i have one! She helps with the chickens, and horse! lol

My idea of the perfect farm dog has nothing to do with breed but with attitude. To me the perfect dog is one that DOESN'T like to wander, very protective of every inch of "their" property, doesn't look twice at any of the farm animals but will come running double-time if he hears a commotion. Also they shouldn't feel the need to bark unless there is "something out there" for real. One that will enjoy playing with the kids and doesn't care too much if their fur gets pulled or their eye gets poked. One that is very wary of strangers but won't bite unless something or someone on the property is messed with.

So it isn't about breed but about character. We have 3 dogs and all 3 have some of each of those qualities but along with the good they have some of the bad so I have yet to find the perfect dog

Growing up on a huge ranch in Texas, we always had Shepherd Collie mixes. They were always great dogs. Loyal, smart and very protective of everybody and all of the animals on the ranch.

That description fits the farm collie/shepherd almost exactly!! That's my idea of the perfect dog, too. I'd love to get a sheltie, but we have coyotes here, and I don't know if a sheltie could protect itsself. I've seen some pretty big ones, but not on my property. And Oblie, your dogs are Beautiful, but they are SO BIG!!So far, though, I have not found anyone with farm dogs for sale.

If you can find a Golden retriever / Great Pyr mix........with a touch of border collie and or heeler grab it!

I love prue breeds but it is hard to beat a loyal mixed breed dog. Just train it right, be consistant, take it with you while doing your chores.......That is the key to a good dog.
