What is Your Idea of the Perfect Farm Dog

One that stays away from the chickens.

Ain't that the truth? The stock dog club I belong to wants to start herding ducks. I told them I would be happy to keep the ducks here but would not be working my dogs on them, they don't care about chickens right now and I would like to keep it that way!

An English Shepherd! Also known as a farm collie. My dogs herd my sheep when needed..lay on the porch and watch them graze and keep an eye out for predators when not needed. They keep my grandson safe. They keep my birds safe by chasing off coyotes and foxes and killing coons and possums. They let me know when theres someone here..and are good at judging if that person *should* be there or not. They protect me from the ram..and from the 1000 lb x bottle calf that still think im his mama. They even carry my buckets back to the feed room for me after i feed. My hubby works off the farm. I could never keep up with all the critters if it wasnt for my farm collies. They are awesome. Check out these two websites and you'll find out a lot more about english shepherds http://www.farmcollie.com/

Labrador Retrievers! Get yourself a big Hunter Lab, nice and stocky. They're very loyal, very affectionate, still family dogs, but LOVE to help.

Our Stud dog, Nacho the Mini Labradoodle is our farm dog, but he is a bit of a wimp.

OH and if it helps still, NEWFOUNDLANDERS, they guard, they WILL save animals, we have a MASSIVE Gentle Giant Newfie called Chandler, she darted out into the road the other week, and SAVED a whole little bunch of ducklings who had been swimming in some flooding, and their legs had got caught in old crops that were under the water, and were drowning. She picked them all out, carried them back one by one to the house in her mouth, and was SO proud of herself!
