What items are must haves or a waste of money when buying for a new baby?

I will tell you we wasted so much money on our first. Many things which are perfectly fine to be bought used, of course we bought new. We bought everything and more that the magazines and those very helpful ladies at babies r us said were must haves.

This is just my personal experience but here goes. Comforter sets are useless and expensive. You can use so very little out of these sets and what you spent on these could probably outfit most of your nursery. On the next child I ended up buying a bed skirt and several sheets individually which saved me a ton. I just decorated around these. All the cute little baskets with cloth liners I found useless. They get messy, you wash them, they shrink and unravel. Honestly I went plastic. Don't look as nice but you can bleach those puppies. You just never know where the pee, poo, and all other uckies may fly. We bought a couple monitors. Never used them. Almost had a nervous breakdown listening for breathing with our first. At this point I can hear my daughter breathing in the next room. They can be handy but the super fancy, so expensive ones are such a waste. Unless you plan on leaving a baby alone alot they are just not needed. Be careful with wipe warmers. The old one my sister in law gave me was great. It died and so we bought a new one which promtly caught on fire. After that they got cold wipes. Diaper stackers. Pain in the rear and a nice plastic tub holds them and everything you need very nicely. ( Our first decided that reaching over and pulling diapers out of the stacker was tons of fun)

Things we never regretted buying ( the list we did regret is bigger and more expensive)

Baby chest carrier
Baby back pack ( love love love these, we actually hiked to water falls and such with babies on our back. Could not have done it without these)
sheets
extra onsies
multiples of the exact same sock ( they always lose one, if you limit yourself to like 2 types and get multiples of those then at the very least you will end up with some matches instead of a bunch of lonely single socks)
sleep sheep ( white noise maker)
a really good humidifier
cheap umbrella stroller to keep in the car ( so handy when your car breaks down and you only planned to run to the bank so you didn't back the big stroller, ours was used so much it didn't last through all the kids and we had to buy another)
contour changing pad ( they cannot roll off those, just one extra safety step. I loved ours. And in a pinch it can act as a baby positioner too)
stickers for the bottom of the tub that change white when the water is too hot
The huge tub of diaper rash cream ( you can never have enough)
gas drops and gripe water
Ear drops ( life saver when they are screaming in pain in the middle of the night, if you go herbal try garlic oil drops. My son claims garlic oil is better than the numbing drops the pediatrician used. He actually recommended them to the pediatrician)
boppy pillow

One thing we did on our last 2 that was new and I loved is I bought a couple boxes of each size of diaper and a couple cases of wipes and stored them under the crib. It was so handy to always have these on hand. No matter what I always had diapers on hand and since things were tighter financially after the baby this was pretty nice too. It spread the expenses of diapers out almost another year by buying ahead.

Oh and forgot to add, after the first we skipped changing tables. Ours ended up being a place to toss the clothes the baby had just dirtied while we changed him on his crib. We had a low dresser though and ended up getting a contour changing bad. Worked wonderfully for the next 3. The changing pad was hauled all over the house and many different used. Very handy

I didn't use ANYTHING else as much as I used this.
I never used a stroller. They are such a pain to wheel through crowds, they are never comfortable to use.
It was much more comfortable than those AWFUL backpacks/chestpacks & I used mine until my son was almost 5.

I have given one to every new mommy who has had a baby shower since I got mine, and everyone who has received one raves.
I danced my boys to sleep in mine, and hiked all over, did dishes when they were babies. It was a life saver.

I have to add a post, I was telling my husband about it and he just could not believe I forgot about the hylands teething and colic tablets. He seems to only remember useful items that had a direct impact on how much sleep HE got. But they were life savers. We use a ton of the hylands products. I do order them from swanson rather than buy them from the grocery. Saves us a good bit of money.

Diapers (larger sizes not the newborn kind)
Wipes, hypoallergenic or make your own
Diaper rash ointment
Changing mats (more than one or at least a passel of baby blankets for poo catching)
Baby blankets (all kinds)
Tylenol as long as it doesn't expire soon
Therometer
Lavender essential oil for making sooting baths (there's lots of recipes on the Internet)
Memory cards for your digital camera
Disks for saving images/video to
Baby blinds for the car
A Boppy!
A GOOD stroller that the wheels don't catch in ruts/bumps.
All the puke rags you can get your hands on. Cloth diapers are good for that!
A good-sized mat/baby blanket for tummy time. The bigger, the better!

There's like so much to get. It is a great idea to start before you ever get pregnant. I'd wait to get the car seat until you are already pregnant. That way if there's a recall, you'll have a better chance of catching it before you use the car seat.

When I had my eldest daughter, nearly 40 years ago, I was given a booklet at the hospital, when attending ante natal appointments. Here is the list of essentials, I think you will find it interesting:

1 dozen terry towelling nappies (diapers)
1 dozen muslin nappies to be used as liners, and for mopping up sick
3 long sleeved night gowns (boy or girl)
3 all in one suits (babygros)
3 vests
4 nappy pins
3 bibs
2 cardigans (only for a winter baby!)
2 pairs of bootees or socks
2 pairs of anti scratch mittens
3 cotton sheets
2 woolen blankets

A pram (basinet or stroller) is useful but not essential
A cot or crib is not essential as baby can happily sleep in a lined drawer (do not leave it in the chest of drawers, for safety sake)
A car seat will be useful if you should use a car occasionally
A baby bath is not necessary, baby can be happily bathed in a washing up bowl!

We knew how to raise a cheap baby in those days!

I forgot about the gowns! Boo wouldn't wear them. LOL He has always been such a nudist, hehe. Ohh, and all those cute little hats for babies. Why did you post this thread?? Now we want more babies.

Wow, I think everyone has hit on what you need and don't need. We went pretty simple ourselves. I never used a changing table and our house is too small to need a monitor. I did use a bassinet because I BF and it was so much easier just to roll the baby onto the bed for nursing in the middle of the night, I did use the gowns though, and loved them. I never could match up the snaps in the sleepers at night with my eyes closed. Good luck on your baby and here is my caution to everyone with babies. Watch the strings on those little socks. One wrapped around my baby's toe and cut it to the bone. I am so thankful I always changed her clothes before bed. Her little baby toe had turned purple. I'm sure it would have been damaged beyond repair if I had not checked it. She's fine now and is 17 years old(but still is my baby)

Always check out garage sales even when you are not pregnant right now. As soon I found out I was pregnant in mid or late September, there were plenty of garage sales going on. When I announced to my hubby after he got off from work that we are expecting, he said lets hit the garage sales! So off we went and bought alot of newborn and up to 12 to one year old clothes. Then the baby shower, it was wipes, diapers, more diapers and towels, spit rags and little soft toys for baby to use. My mother bought me a new mattress while hubby bought the crib at a discount where he works at (K's Merchandise).

A box for memories too! I have my old great grandma's chest that I had my things in there as a kid, and my daughter's newborn clothes, two blankets and a toy along with her bedsheet, and comforter (yes, it was not used very much at all!) and bumpguards so when dd comes of age to have her own kids, its all there for her to use. For family or one year old picture of her, I kept her dress!

Pick up a tote or a very pretty wood chest for your young baby. When she/he gets older, you can point him that chest that it is all of his baby clothes, memos, all the little things you want to keep, there it is!

I even have a book of the family tree as well, copied the old photographs and posted in there. Something for her/him to remember by, who she has come from.

The only true necessities are food and shelter. Add cleanliness as a very close second.

So, you need a nursing mama (preferably) or bottles and formula.
A home with a safe place to sleep; a car seat for any motorized transportation, clothing and blankets that keep the baby sufficiently warm/cool.
Diapers and some means of cleaning the baby.

Everything else is really an extra. Some consider an extra item indispensable; others think the exact same thing is ridiculously useless.

Definately the gowns, but you know that already. I think the one piece pajamas with the built in feet are cute, but they are a major pain to change the baby if you are shopping or trying not to wake them up.
I can tell you NOT to waste money on a Diaper Genie. They didn't "lock in smell" and were a pain to use.
I liked the shopping cart cover, but it's not a necessity. I mean, my mom didn't have one for me and I didn't end up catching anything awful...but I liked it.
Also, and I know this sounds crazy, but when the baby is about three months old...if you need to get something done at home and need baby to be safely distracted...get a Teletubbies DVD. I thought they were so dumb, until I had babies and I witnessed the miracle first hand...my baby staring at them in a trance for thirty minutes.

I could vacuum, wash dishes, and start my laundry.
