TSC gets their chicks from a hatchery, but I'm not sure which one. It may be they get them from more than one hatchery depending on the store location. I suggest you call your local TSC and ask which hatchery they get their chicks from, then check out what breeds that hatchery carries.
Yes TSC gets their chicks from hatcheries as stated before. Last year I bought a bunch from the assorted pullet bin and the bantam bin. With the bantams I got 4 cochins and a Lavender ?. In the LF typical BA's, Exechequer Leghorns, and several that I still can't figure out what they were. I think they sent them the accidents!
yeah i remember asking them last yr and they didn't even know....they told me i got some RIR ....they were actually production red....i was too anxious to wait until i got my chick order from cackle....so i got 4 hens from the pullet bin( one by the way they told me was a white rock....production red) and my DD picked one out of the straight run bin and got a roo.... Thant is about all i know
The one is got mine from last year where Amberlinks, great layers. But the people who work there didnt know what they had. The chicks were from Mount Healthy. Oh and I got a roo from the pullet bin lol!
My experience with TSC was that if you can get an employee to look at the shipping /recieving record of the birds they recieved they can tell you the breed....assuming they kept the boxes of chicks separate after arrival to the store. Our store had them labeled on the container they were in...Sex linked and bantam somethings (Don't recall, it was a year ago, after all)
To get my Mallards I had to call around to all the TSC in the area to find one that recieved Mallards. (Fortunately it was only 30 miles away)
Like all such chain stores, they buy from a hatchery, perhaps more than one nearest to them, or whoever corporate has cut a deal with.
Find out from the manager or staff what day is delivery day, as it is usually a fixed day of the week. The chicks get picked up by kids without proper supervision and the adults can be equally naive about chick handling. They get mixed up in various tubs, etc. It is what it is.
For the privilege of instant gratification, this is what you get. Shrug. BTW, the prices aren't anything to get excited about. Usually a dollar premium over just buying the chicks directly yourself.
From my experience most of them go by what they see on the shipping list if they get told its a RIR the say its a RIR even though technically it is a Production Red.
