We have a Treeing Coonhound who is very curious and might eat the birds, and a black lab mix who lays a few feet from from the run and snaps at our coonhound whenever he starts fixating on the birds. I don't trust any of them alone outside with the chickens free ranging though!

We have a ShihTzu who herds/protects our flock here in the backyard. We currently have five pullets, and one cockeral (Buff Orpington).

And out at our farm we put the seven Australorp pullets, and two of the Buff Orpington cockerals.

They are all tame, but we kept the most tame rooster, and all the female Buff Orps because we wanted to have purebreds.

But yeah, my ShihTzu does a good job at protecting, mingling, gaurding, and herding my flock. They love him, and he loves them. They have grown up with him since the fourth day of their lives!

They are used to having their butts smelled, and having their "group" be seperated by Benji (that's my ShihTzus name) walking through, and having Benji lay down next to them, and what not.

Ours have a westie and scottie. When I have to be inside for any length of time but still want the chickens to free range, I make sure to let the dogs out with them . . . they kill anything furry, but will turn over on their tummies to let the chickens peck them. It's too cute.

Mine have a Husky/Lab mix who could care less if they live or die, she wants nothing to do with the chickens or their silly existence. Come to think of it she is not a very good protector for them.

They also have a Pitbull/Mix who is more interested in trying to get their treats. But otherwise stays clear of them.

And then there is my wife's dog, Wiener dog/mix who got her butt kicked by the roo when she decided to try and play. She now gives them an occasion bark in their direction but gives a wide berth.
