What Kind of Dog WIll Not Chase Chickens?

There is no particular breed that won't chase, just well trained dogs!

I have an english springer who didn't see a chicken or guinea until she was 11 and although often she trembles with excitement and has gone into the flushing position several times....she doesn't chase them.

Good training and avoid breeds that are specifically developed for hunting.

I have read that any breed will work as an LGD as long as it is exposed to and lives with the animals it is supposed to guard from 3 weeks on. They were talking about goats and sheep so it may not work for chickens.

We have a golden retriever and he is a big softie. He chases the chickens because he likes to see them fly and eats their poop, but he has never harmed them.
If your dog is well exercised and well trained the dog and the chickens will live in peace. We started our dog on a leash around the chickens until he got used to them, and now he can roam around the yard with the chickens. Our buff orp is the boss of HIM. She will chase HIM around the yard and peck his nose! :p Just make sure your dog gets socialized, well trained, and well loved. Choose your breed carefully to find a dog with the right temperment for you. Try watching Dogs 101 on Animal planet. It's all about dog breeds!

I have two older dogs - one is about five years old and the other is about fourteen. I got chicks this past spring and have not had any real problems between the dogs and chickens. I started introducing the chicks to the dogs from the very start, and they have all accepted one another as part of the family. The five-year-old terrier chased them a little when they were small, but she quickly learned that they were not toys and she allowed them to climb all over her and scratch her fur. She doesn't pay any attention to them now. The fourteen-year-old chihuahua didn't pay attention to them when they were small, and now every once in a while she gets a wild hair and charges them to see them scatter. So I think getting an older dog is a possibility - just be willing to put in the time in training.

Put an E collar on just about any dog and zap em when they get too close and they will learn to avoid them. Eventually they will lose their interest in the birds and walk right by them

There certainly is no rule. I have a Malamute that wants nothing to do with the chickens and a Pyranees who can't get enough of them (she just wants to play- but those teeth are sharp!). Good luck!!

That's good to know. I haven't got chickens yet, but am in the planning stage. I have two old chihuahuas. One barks at all the backyard birds and tries to chase them, but the other does not. The dogs aren't out in the yard much. They have a dog run to do their 'business" in, and when I let them out in the yard, they want to come in after a few minutes. I would have the chickens fenced anyway, but I'm afraid of the yapper bothering them through the fence and barking at them.
