Next Wednesday night, the forecast is a low of 38° and the lowest in the coming 8 days. The hives are in a valley, and cold air definitely settles down there, so frost would not surprise me at all. Mid-October is about when we get out first frost, so right about average timing.

Calling for a low of 39 this coming Thursday which will be more like 35. low 80s Mon Tue then in the 60s 70s. Bees will still be flying strong the later part of the days. Still taking syrup voraciously.

Do you stop giving syrup based on low overnight lows or low daytime highs? At what temp do you quit?
Usually when we get a run (3-4) of low to mid 30s F at night or when the bees slow down on taking syrup. I have installed the 2" foam insulation on top of the super under the top cover which helps retain bee generated heat. Mid to late November, depending on temp and bee activity, I'll drop the solid sugar feeder shims to start absorbing moisture as the bees will be in their tighter condensation producing cluster and insurance feed to carry them if they need it. More of a feel than a hard schedule.
