What Kind of Dog WIll Not Chase Chickens?

Hi,
We would like to get a dog. What breed is the best at living with livestock? It would be a house dog but I do not want it trying to eat my duck, and chickens when its outside. Thanks

Any dog breed would be fine. As long as it's WELL TRAINED. I have Terriers and hounds. Neither bothers my chickens, cows, or mules.

I've asked myself this question a lot when we were thinking about getting a puppy. We ended up with a german sheperd mastiff mix and he is the most adorable thing. He is learning not to mess with any of the household animals and to respect us as The Authority. It is all about training, and German Sheperds are so smart and want to please. Basically any dog you want can be a good dog around chickens if they are raised right. We are going to get a Great Pyrenees when we get a LGD.

I would really recommend getting a puppy, and not a full grown dog. I prefer to adopt adults but when dealing with something like this you would really benefit from a puppy. It is definitely easier to teach a dog not to bother the chickens then deal with the problem later on.

I think azelgin is right - just do a lot of controlled exposure to them as a pup & you should be fine.
I have an aussie that won't chase the birds or the rabbits, unless I ask her to move them up.

Well-trained is the key. We have a 6 yr old terrier that will try to kill anything that moves. It took about 3 weeks, now a year later the 2 alpha hens go mouse hunting with the dog around the coop when we move it. Evidently mouse is good eatin'.

The only dog that won't chase chickens is a dog with no legs.

Thats like asking "What rooster will not crow?". Any dog will chase chickens if not properly trained. If they kill them, thats another story. Our golden pup is in training now. She does chase them, but when she gets them, she holds them down gently and sniffs them.
