What kind of Snake is This? (Plus Strange Preservation)

I'm not sure what kind of snake it was, but a gal who lives in my area had a huge snake under her porch. It was killing her birds and I think she had some large fowl. A wildlife rescue came and got it.

That doesn’t sound fun at all! Those are also kept as pets, and I bet that since your neighbor found it under her porch when it was very large, someone bought it at a small size (like my Python mummy) for a pet, and when it grew, they didn’t want to deal with it so they released it outside where it took shelter under that porch.

2 years ago found this preserved snake inside my dads car door. He pulled the panel off to repair the window, and inside was this very strange, and perfectly preserved snake. My question is, What kind of snake is it? I think it’s a Copperhead, but it’s small and I’m not certain. View attachment 2442171
View attachment 2442172For a bonus question, does anyone know how this happened? The skin is shiny and preserved, and the scales look smooth, the body is stuck in this position and it’s fairly solid. I’d call it “Petrified” but google doesn’t show any info on anything preserved like this, not even for snakes. Is it just some sort of strange or rare thing? Could it be Taxidermy? I don’t see any signs and it looks very real. I’m sort of afraid to take it out of the air to check though, in case it starts to smell (Which it did the first time, if my memory serves me right)

You might investigate hog nose snakes on the internet. They tend to act like they are dead and may puff up and hold still. You sure it's dead? I'd get rid of any patterned snake very carefully. Hog nose are marked similar to that one and a smaller sized snake not real small.... I can't stand snakes....hard for me to even look at it nope I'll have nightmares omg!!! GET RID OF IT!!! ewe please!!!! Don't take a chance it can bite you. My nephew kept a hognose snake as a pet but I can't stand them. That's about the right size for a hognose and collar. I think the bull snakes around Missouri are a bit more orange but the rattlers and copperheads can be that color too so get rid of it please.

We do live in an area that seem to get other people catches and releases. This was dropped off on the side of the road down at the foot of my drive way a few years ago. I found it a good home. Not everything is bad but it wasn't right. I'm not a fan of catch and release or dropping off...

Did you read my full post? Snake has been dead in that jar for over 2 years- Absolutely confirmed dead, and definitely mummified before it was put in it, since it was left out on a card table for 2 days before I got a hold of it

Hog nose have that upturned “lip” or nose, and this snake doesn’t have it. Good guess though!

That’s ok if you wouldn’t keep it yourself. Everyone would make a different choice in this situation, but because of my love for fossils, and these sorts of things, I think it is an interesting find and I chose to keep it.
