I was just curious what you all use and how satisfied you are with them. I can't seem to find one that I like or that works really well. Any pics and comments on how they work for you would be great. Thanks

4gallon wide mouth heated bucket is my chickens main water source in the coop. I needed the heated bucket over winter and it's been working fine so I haven't replaced it. It does need dumped fairly frequently as it gets dirt in it but it's so easy to fill it mostly off sets the 30seconds required to dump it out the door. When I have young chickens out there I get out a 1gallon chick waterer and put it on a very large brick so they don't risk falling in the bucket to get a drink. Never use a standard narrow 5 gallon bucket because even adults can drown in it. Always use wide mouth buckets and put a brick in the bottom if there are smaller chickens. Outside of the coop there is a low sided 60gallon stock tank with a brick stack in case someone should fall in.

This is what I made and use. I redid the waters and put a plastic oil pan instead of the galvanized pan so I can use ACV. I really like mine.

I drilled one hole at where I wanted the water level to be bolted it together and used silicone to seal it.
When I fill it I take the hose to the coop/run dump the old water out plu the hole with my finger and fill then put the lid on (air tight) and put in back.
It cleans up easy as the chickens roost on it and poo on the lid so it is easy to hose off.

I also use it for my ducks.

Well, I got tired of cleaning poopy waterers and was very concerned about the cleanliness of their water. I went and got some milk jugs and these awesome poultry waterer nipples from Tek Supply. They've got a website.

http://www.teksupply.com/farm/suppl...&division=TekSupply&pageId=ItemDetail&isDoc=N

I drilled a hole in the bottom of the milk jug (on the flat side) and pushed in the nipple with the grommet and voila! Water!! Clean water with acv, the nipples are stainless so it's going to be a while before they rust. I've had 2 and 6 week old chicks take to it immediately. I feel better that there's no poo in the water and it's clean.

If there's algea in there, I dump the water, cleaning it with vinegar and kosher salt. Swish it around till the algea is gone, about a minute. Rinse several times and it's good to go! Safer than bleach and there's no residue like there is with bleach. I cover the jugs with their roosts and there's no poopy covered bottles either! I think the main reason for my algea is the brooder lights, as soon as I can turn them off, the algea should definitely be minimized.

The biggest plus, I don't have to water every day! I use 2 gallon sized milk jugs and for 22 chicks-I water every 3 or 4 days depending on the temp. Good luck, I hope you find what works for you!

I have the 3 gallon waterer that has the red bottom that you screw onto to the white top. I like it because i can see the water level in it at a glance. I seen somewhere on this site where a guy used white 6" pipe that stood 5' tall and the bottom had a 90 degree piece on the bottom of it. It looked really neat. I dont know if you can picture that or not.

Rabbit water bottles with a ball for a few adult hens works for me... No dirt in it, can't roost on it, Can't complain!!! Just get the biggest one you can find to avoid filling it twice or more every day.

I have the same set up inside and out. My waterer is from an idea off this site, a bucket with big holes drilled into the top of it so the chickens can stick there heads in and drink - works like a charm. The only thing I would add is a cover so they don't fall in and perhaps some weight to it so it isn't as tippy. Other than those two things, I love it.

I use a plastic 1 gallon hanging water dispenser. I only have 6 chickens, so it's adequate, but even though it hangs, it still develops slime in the little moat where they dip their beaks. I like it, but I change it every single day, even though it is still 2/3 full. It hangs from a 2x4 frame I built - right beside their hanging feed dispenser, which I like a lot and have to change every 5th day - it's a 10lb. feeder. I think I am going to try the stainless nipple dispenser, as it would seem to be a more sanitary method of watering the chickens, but I am thinking the chickens are so used to the other type of dispenser that they might not take to the 'nipple' style. Can anyone enlighten me about the possible chickens' reaction to a change of that nature? Thank you.

I don't understand how the nipples work. If I read correctly, it can be with or without a hose hookup. I just can not figure it out. I have seen the ads, but the explanation is not clear to me. I would like a system, but not with a hose running all the time. How do you stick the nipple into the gallon jug? Doesn't it leak? Do you have to do something to prevent leaks?
What about those auto systems with the little red "cups?" I wish I could see one in action.
