A little more info may be helpful. Was this hen on hen or hen on chick, etc.

Agree with @PD-Riverman the magic word is blood.

If you throw a new chicken into an existing, large flock with an aggressive dominant hen/rooster, I wouldn't be surprised. Also if a chicken has an open wound, the others might try to peck it out of curiosity and kill said chicken. And possibly eat the dead chicken. Ew.
