Curious--

How many of you are breeding rabbits for meat?  (Sorry if that question upsets some, I've never eaten rabbit nor do I process any of our animals, but my husband wanted to try some NZ's for that purpose).

Does anyone raise NZ's for anything other than that purpose?  From what I've heard that tends to be the go-to meat breed.

I raise Beverens for meat. I don't like NZW, and I only want to raise heritage breeds. Plus, everyone and their mom raises NZW and I like to be different. Lol.

I didn't like NZW's either (the red eyes were creepy to me), that's why I told DH if he wanted to raise meat rabbits to get them thinking I wouldn't be as bothered by the processing.

But now that we have them, I love them! They're really friendly. The person I got them from said they'd never been handled, but within a couple days they were hopping to the fence to be pet.

I'm not really familiar with the Beverens. I always loved Angora, but couldn't find them so we ended up with lionheads as pets. I love the long fur.

I've been keeping chickens for awhile. And I've always had rabbits. But this is our first time actually breeding them, so I've been reading all I can on it. This is a useful thread.

This is Leon too. Sorry if I posted this in the wrong spot. I am new to this site. All you guys seem to have knowledge and experience with rabbits. I was hoping for a little help. We just got these 2 rabbits yesterday. A friend of my husband gave them to us. He had bought them last year at the local fair from two separate breeders. They were told that they are lionhead rabbits. I did a little research and read about double, single and no mane lionheads and that their color is called broken. Someone also said they might be a mix but they are from 2 different breeders and look a lot alike. Ok, I have rambled enough. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Cute bunnies.

I have NZW's from 6 lines now and they all look similar :gig

They do look like lion heads to me but I don't have a lot of knowledge on the breed. I see a single mane and a double main. That color is indeed called "broken" in other breeds too. They're so cute.
a bit on the small side for me tho.
I keep some crosses (large colored brown eyed rabbits for specific customers who feel the REW's give them the heebe jeebies :lau ) i personally love my NZWs . They have amazing reproduction, great feed to meat ratio and I got lucky with really tame sweethearts. And the popularity keeps them paying for themselves.
I have read the NZWs can be flighty or aggressive but ice only had one a%&hat buck that refused to be nice to the ladies and he was rehomed with full disclosure and has like 10 of his own ladies now (maybe he was in hormonal changes? He was a butthead tho) all others have been big cuddly wabbits..

Lionheads are really popular pets here, really sweet :)
