The mom is a Black Satin. She was pregnant when we got her & didn't know it.
We have lionheads as pets for the kids, & made sure to only get males as we didn't want to breed.
Recently my husband wanted to add NZ's to the homestead to breed. This is our first time. When we went to get the NZ, my kids fell in love with this super friendly older Black Satin the guy had, so we ended up with her too. We've only had her 3 weeks, so she was pregnant when we got her, so surprise first litter! I believe the dad is a NZ since that's what the guy had & some of the babies are pink.
We weren't planning on breeding this one, just the pure NZ's. Cute little surprise though for Easter, my kids were excited.

Latte (my chocolate mini Rex doe) had her 2nd litter on the wire. Ugh. She keeps building these huge nests and then kindling in front of it. I managed to get to the babies and pop them in the nest. This was 9am Sunday. Everything was fine throughout the day. Yesterday morning I go out, she's shoved the babies out of the nest and destroyed it. Ugh! Babies were cold but still alive so I pulled Bonnie (1'st time Beveren mom) from her 3 day olds, tucked the Rex babies in with hers and rubbed her fur all over then. Put Bonnie back in. When I came back to check on them, all the babies had fat tummies and were snuggled together.
Needless to say Latte is not having any more babies unless I breed Bonnie at the same time.

Curious--

How many of you are breeding rabbits for meat? (Sorry if that question upsets some, I've never eaten rabbit nor do I process any of our animals, but my husband wanted to try some NZ's for that purpose).

Does anyone raise NZ's for anything other than that purpose? From what I've heard that tends to be the go-to meat breed.

:th Eleven. 11. Yes. Cracker the NZW doe had ELEVEN KITS. :bun

Im thinking thats too many for her... :(
But another1st time mommy doe is due today so I have a foster maybe. 2 of the 11 are smaller but fat bellies so maybe they'll all make it? I'm thinking bigger isn't always better in regards to litter size ? Bigger baby yes bigger number of offspring can be an issue no? Eleven?! Poor girls happy tho. Sweet even.

And Amy another NZ doe just made the most insane nest and started pulling fur lol its like they're racing babies lol
