what should i get incubator wise

i got my GQF hova-bator from Randall Burkey company for around $70. they were the cheapest hova-bators i could find.

not sure what model it is but it works, but i use it as a hatcher. if you're willing to spend more i recommend a brinsea octagon 20 or 40. doesn't get much better than that.

Nicola,

My wife and I are getting ready to buy a Brinsea 20 Advanced with the auto turner, and like you money is an issue. BUT I've talked myself into getting the Brinsea 20 Advanced. My reasoning is simple - it is idiot proof... Brinsea 20 Advanced has a digitally controlled temp and displays the temp AND humidity on a display, it's auto programmable and with the auto turner you just hang back and count the days on the calendar...

I have looked for a couple weeks on eBay USA and watched folks get great prices for USED Brinsea 20s... I watched a DX last week go for $301.00 American. The Brinsea 20 Advanced (fancier than the DX from what I can gather) costs $339.00 at the Brinsea site - add tax and shipping and it's $360.00 or so... You have different electricity there in AU than we do in America, different plugs - if I am right the UK version is probably a better fit, adapter and plug wise, YES ?? (anyone in the UK or in the know please speak up).

I know my wife and I will be much more relaxed doing our first batch of eggs AND if and when we get tired of doing the hatching thing (which I doubt) I KNOW I can easily sell it here or on eBay and get a great return on my investment. And with the hatch rates folks talk about here I won't be wasting a lot of money on eggs that don't hatch. AND LASTLY my wife and I are very sensitive people. We've lost our share of pets, the last thing I want to put her thru (or me) is watching eggs that don't hatch. Seems like the Brinsea 20 is a really well designed device.

Best of luck

Nicola,
I just posted a getting started / thermostat thread. If you can get one of those Zilla Controllers you won't have to worry about the temp swings. It would be cheaper than a new bator. If you have a pet store close, they should have something similar in the reptile section of the store...ZooMed sells something similar.

i Just bought a 1588 from gqf website and got a pretty good deal.
incubator plus -30 Bobwhite Quail eggs - No. 1610 Automatic egg turner with both universal and quail egg racks

the brinsa 20 advance goes for 590$ aus that is wayy to much for me scince im a junior that doesnt get paid alot and i hoighly doubt my mum will give me half the money when she doesnt want me hatching heaps of eggs

I just bought a Hovabator 1588 for 120 bucks from Cutler supply. That's a pretty good price and I already have a turner so I'm all set

Nicola,

So mate, sounds like you need maybe a Brinsea ECO with turner, that can't be that crazy expensive for you.

And like I said in a thread I started today the Brinsea models really hold their resale value: I have been tracking the Brinsea models on US eBay the last couple weeks, even did Advanced Searches on ended auctions and the USED models sell for very close to what a new one goes for. Maybe a good pitch point to get parental subsidies. Perhaps you can promise good grades, or wash cars, mow lawns, do laundry, even cook dinners to earn a little more...

Best of luck and give me a shout out anytime...

Michael (and Nan).

IMO buy a Dickey Incubator, but of course it depends how many eggs you intend to incubate at a time. The Brinsea would be my second choice for smaller quantities, using your homemade incubator for hatching.
What ever your decision, isn't this fun???
