What small breed of puppy do you recommend?

Pick a breed you like and is inclined towards the behaviors you desire. Train it and love on it. You will be a bigger factor in the outcome of your dogs behavior then the breed. Puppies are a lot of work, plain and simple. If you have the time and desire to do it right, go for it. But remember, like other members have said, you get out what you put in. Some breeds are naturally very found of humans and other dogs, like the golden doodle. Does this mean that they don't need training? No. But it might make their training easier and quicker. just give it 15 minutes a day, every day. Our dog is a rescue and she is awesome, except when somebody comes the door, she explodes. She gets so excited, and needs to "warn us". We should of nipped that behavior in the bud. Be consistent and I bet that you can fit in the time to do it right. I wish you the best of luck to you and your future pup!

@KaylorFarms I would recommend a cockapoo! It's a mix between a poodle and a cocker spaniel. Mine has maxed out at 17 pounds. They don't shed, they are calm if you train them right, and are very loving and enjoy playing. You can also get lots of colors. They are the perfect size where you can control them, but you also aren't tripping over them while walking. He does bark, but that's just natural for a dog. It's not very loud though. He's definitely due for a haircut!

Well let’s go back to the OP and consider the question. She has three ducks already but they are not what she wants. She wants a fourth duck that will be well socialized, without effort, not need a pond, won’t grow bigger than what she prefers although it’s standard calls for it to be bigger. This duck will be her constant companion even though her other three ducks aren’t any more. They are cared for by just free ranging. Her new duck might have a coop but maybe not. If not it can roam her twelve fenced acres. She has had rescue ducks but isn’t interested now because they didn’t come presocialized.

kdogg331, you are not the OP. You sort of hijacked the thread from the OP to get info for yourself. Nobody has minded talking to you and you seem like a responsible and agreeable person. But I think it would behoove you to go back and reread the details of what the OP has said. I fostered many many rescue dogs and screened many potential adopters. I believe from my experience that the OP is not currently a good candidate for yet another dog. When people ask for opinions they often don’t hear what they want to. Yes I’m harsh sometimes but when it comes to poor innocent animals who have no other champions I’m going to be on their side every time.

PS when we adopted one of our foster dogs we still had to go through a home check and fill out a lengthy screening form. The rescue pretty much knew our answers but we were not insulted by this. It was the same thing I’ve gone through with my purebred dogs and their responsible breeders.

Right now I am buying a horse and before I met her I had to give extensive details about how we care for our existing horses. I even have someone more experienced in Western horsemanship than I am to work with her and me to make sure her life isn’t messed up or wasted. This is where I come from when I responded to the op.

What small dog (like a Basset!) is a good fit for the op? In my opinion, none. I’m done with this thread but thanks for playing.

First of all, the other 3 dogs belong to my parents. They're the ones who take care of all of them. So I just wanted a dog that could be my own that I could take care of and take to parks, shopping etc.. My Golden Retrievers are very well socialized, the last time we took our male to the park a bunch of kids came up to pet him and he just sat there and let them rub all over him.. Our other one is exactly the same way. Our dogs are greatly loved and taken care of. It's not that I don't like my other dogs, it's just that I want a dog to call my own. So for anyone to say that I get dogs and then just toss them out like trash because I wasn't satisfied with them is just mean, and you make other people on this forum think that I don't like or take care of my animals when I do. They don't just roam all of my 10 acres.. We keep them close to the house so we know where they are and they have a whole acre and a half to run around on..
And I agree that for @MomJones to say that "You'd probably be better off with a stuffed toy?" was totally rude and uncalled for. I just asked for recommendations on small dog breeds and made a few specifications on what I was looking for, and people are attacking me and claiming I don't take care of my dogs and that I shouldn't have one.
Like I SAID in a previous post, I would have time to socialize and train my dog since I am home all day, and I go to town a lot during the week so I can take her around the stores, etc.. I totally understand that dogs bark, but I just didn't want one that will be yapping at people and other dogs when I take her out because people do get annoyed and I don't blame them. I know all it takes is socialization but I don't know if other breeds are just more prone to it than others.
All I asked for was opinions on breeds. I don't know why some of you are being rude and making false accusations against me.. Do you actually say those kinds of things to peoples faces? Or just on the internet?
Anyhow I appreciate everyone trying to help me on here and giving me their experiences. I think I'm actually going to get a larger breed.

With all due respect, and then I will desist as well: It's not that you said no, but the way you said it. You can educate and advocate for animals without being insulting and throwing shade. Now, if OP showed up here and were like "ZoMg I just bot a pupperino bcuz its cute and I haz no knowhowz about it! Halp?" I'd be flaming angry too, but they are just asking for info before getting a dog. Effectively, they were doing their research beforehand and that is honorable IMO. I think we do best for animals when we don't attack and alienate people who are asking for advice. You can say no without getting into ad hominem territory. Peace.

Good luck whatever you decide, and good on you doing your research and asking people about their breed experiences before making such an important decision! :hugsOne last bit of advice: www.akc.org has profiles of different breeds, and Royal Canin I think, have great "what breed is right for you?" questionnaires which can also help in your research and decision making journey.

I'm sorry people treated you the way they did, it's just not fair. They were filling in the gaps with information that they assumed and was far from the truth. I'm sure whatever dog you pick it will be awesome! To me, you sound like a very responsible owner and any dog will be lucky to find a home with you.

I know all it takes is socialization but I'm not out that often so I want something that doesn't need a lot of socializing to be friendly towards strangers.

Like I SAID in a previous post, I would have time to socialize and train my dog since I am home all day, and I go to town a lot during the week so I can take her around the stores, etc..
This is where I got confused, sorry if I misunderstood you.

Yeah this part was definitely kind of confusing and kind of conflicting. In the one post it says they’re not out very much then say they’re out a lot. But I still don’t think it was deserving of all the extremely rude and mean comments.
