Death by Sprouts.
I have sand in my run and I notice when the the girls find some boss or 3 grain scratch (I think it's triticale/barley/oats) trying to sprout. So I decided to seed a 12"x18" area of the run with a generous amount of both and worked them in the sand about an inch and covered with hardware cloth secured with stones. They try to get some seeds that are near the surface but give up for easier pickings.
Less than a week later I notice the BO going after green sprouts coming out of the mesh (a bit surprised) so I remove the cloth and the girls spent a good twenty minutes destroying the rich bed of sprouting seed. I was surprised since the area doesn't get much sun, but must be moist enough to get things going. I did water the area generously the day of planting so that must have helped.
Getting another area ready, this time planning to let it grow a little higher.
