i would write that off in my mind as a "Uh-oh, back up hold the phone. slam on brakes. " and think.."Peddler..." "they probably went the a animal shelter.. or found it in a dumpster and are now trying to make a profit " but thats just me. i really dont care what they do with it. they just wont be getting my money.

When I take on a pet, not livestock, I take them on for life. Now, if it came to feeding my kids or the pet...well, that choice is clear, though not easy.

Livestock don't always fall in the realm of pets/family friend. A jack stud is usually a "livestock" purchase and sold accordingly. Just because he has a nice personality, he does have a necessary function...making babies, which it appears he has served his function at that particular farm! Baby on the way!

The part about that ad that irks me is the fact that he's not registered, priced at $600 which does not scream well trained for anything, but he's still a stud. Because he has working reproductive organs does not mean he should be reproducing. Having spots does not equal good breeding, conformation and performance record. BTW I'm not gender biased, I don't think a mare with bad conformation and not trained & proven in at least 1 discipline should be bred because of their unusual coloring or "great personality".
That's just my 2 cents.... with the lousy market if you're going to breed why not breed something that has a chance to stay sound most of it's life & stay off a Mexico-or-Canada bound semi truck.

***Not bashing grade horses in general, I've owned my share of them. Just tired of seeing poor quality stock being bred with the odds stacked against them.

I gotta go with BeeKissed and kbarrett on this one.

The donkey is livestock. While is deserves good care, it will not suffer mentally if it is sold to another party who will take adequate care of it.

The folks selling him seem to be awfully proud of what they've got hence the high price tag and intact status for an unregistered beast.

I see donks on Craigslist for under $50.00 all the time here.

All I am going to say is I agree with SterlingAcres. Just bc the animal is 'livestock' does not mean it should not be treated with the same respect others treat dogs or cats.

I agree also, but with both sides. My reply has nothing to do with the donkey, BUT I feel bad for animals that get bumped from home to home to home, Just like our human children that are in foster care. Those poor kids are just waiting for a home, they don't want to be thrown all around and feel like they aren't wanted.
As for the animals, I believe if there is a good reason you need to find a home for your animal, no matter what kind, then by all means, find it a home. But what is the motive?? A good home or money? If ther person truly wants to find a good home, then why should a lot of money be an issue and why would they charge, lets just say, 500.00 for a 4 year old dog that they have to get rid of because they got a new puppy that doesn't get along with it? That one I HAVE seen before on Craigslist.
I think using certain excuses is sad. But at the same time there are lots of people out here for what ever reason can no longer take care of their animal, I think it is far better for the animal to go to someone who can rather than stay with that person and become neglected.

That's funny, I actually thought on first reading that it was a 4-legged baby they were expecting (donkey or horse) and they needed the stall and paddock space

Which seems entirely legitimate to me.

And I think you would have a hard time selling even a GOOD WELL-TRAINED jack on shortish notice in many parts of the country for more than like $600 - they are not exactly a hot commodity with a large market - so I would not make too many assumptions about Horrible Evil People Who Won't Remove Testicles Of Totally Un-Breeding-Worthy Male Animals. Just can't tell from the ad.

If it *were* because of an upcoming *human* baby, honestly I think that could be quite legitimate as well. I don't know whether you've had multiple equines and babies at the same time Shellie but I can tell you that it has been extremely difficult for me to get it to work, especially in wintertime. If I did not have the ability to keep ours on 24/7 turnout I am pretty certain I would have had to find new homes for them when kids came onto the radar, because there is just no way to go out and spend 45 minutes mucking stalls in -25 degree weather with no husband home and a young baby. There just isn't.

Even with dogs or cats, I think sometimes people DO legitimately have to give family matters priority -- when you adopt (or buy) a pet it is just not possible to be ABSOLUTELY sure that you will not suffer a major financial reverse, or have to move to a new location where there's noplace to live that will take your pets (in some cities it is exceedingly difficult to find apartments that are both habitable *and* inexpensive *and* allow animals), or have some sort of a family-circumstance change that is not compatible with animals. For instance some peoples kids ACTUALLY DO turn out to have very very severe asthma around the pets. Whatcha gonna do, sign the kid over to child protective services to be put in a foster home just so that the cat can stay?

I know these things are probably somewhat of a minority, among situations where people are giving up a pet, but THEY ARE REAL and I don't think they are quite as hens-teeth rare as people often like to pretend. I think it's important to preserve the line between getting aggravated at specific people for doing specific things, versus getting all hate-y at people in general who can't keep their animals.

Frankly I'd say the seller of the donkey is actually being pretty responsible in a) placing an ad (not taking him to auction or dumping him on a rescue), b) pricing him at low, and c) starting this in late summer when there is a greater chance of finding a taker.

JMO,

Pat

If Craigs list gets your hackles up do like I do STAY AWAY from the pet section. geesh is that so hard to do?
