The most likely explanation is that one is a misidentified female. It being a female with a hormone issue making it appear male is probably the next most likely. It being intersex or chimeric is least likely. Possible, but very unlikely.

Again- split them up. See if more eggs appear. That will narrow down which one it is laying eggs.

If they won't hold still, catch them for a photo. They're in a cage, they should be moderately easy to round up. Hold them in one hand to photograph, or put them in a small container. If you can catch one and gently cover its head with a cloth, the darkness should calm it down, and we mostly need body pics to try and sex them.

Easier said than done sometimes, lol! 4x4 brooder, 3 little chickies... one giant human... how hard can it be? they bit me! Hard, almost drew blood! Vicious little velociraptors! I still got crummy photos and could only catch 2... #3 watched and learned from the others mistakes.

Still eagerly awaiting photos... don’t know about quail, or much about chickens either... but waiting on the solution to this mystery
